Storing with desiccant
    #22292430 - 09/26/15 09:25 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So I have baked epsom salts in a jar with dried shrooms already in my fridge.  These mushrooms have already been fan dried for two days, all the mushrooms in there are dry as a bone.  My question is thus; can I make more perhaps and wrap the desiccant in say some loose layers of gauze for breathability but to not touch the mushrooms, stash that in a brown bag, then perhaps in a wooden chest up in my closet or so?  I would really prefer to get them out of the fridge, but I don't want to mess up their integrity.  Thanks!

I'm looking for alternatives to storing in the fridge.

Then don't store them in the fridge. They'll last a good long while outside of the fridge, when storing I prefer jars and desiccant.

First of all don't store them in the fridge.

Dry them to cracker dry where you can powder them with your fingers. Put them in air tight jar, boom lasts years. If you're paranoid throw a descant lack in the jar

Jesus, he deletes and makes a new one.. you had a thread going before.

Dude here's what I did before I had a dehydrator. I fanned for 24-48 hours until almost cracker dry, then put them in the oven on lowest heat for 45ish minutes. Never had to go past an hour. This would get them cracker dry.

Store the mushrooms in an airtight container like jars with the desiccant. Although Epsom salts aren't exactly the best desiccant. Silica is much better.

I'm not sure you guys are reading what I am saying at all.

I already have fan dried.  I already have plenty of cracker dry mushrooms.  I am not getting or using a dehydrator.  I do not need help drying my mushrooms.

What I am asking is for help with storage for already cracker dry mushrooms.

I'm wanting to maybe put them in a a bag with some desiccant, then in a wooden box, perhaps in a closet, and I am just trying to ask if that will keep them from spoiling, as I do not want any humidity to reach them.

The entire reason I made a new thread was because no one was answering the question I am asking, and still no one is doing that.

 there are answers. Just not the ones you want to hear right? The reason why shit was over is because people already said it was for storage and not to let them take too long.

:whathesaid:

Yep, to make it simple, even though Mad Season outlined it well enough:

Store already dried mushrooms in an airtight container with a silica gel packet and they will stay dry.

Can't get any more answered than that.

I don't understand what you guys are trying to get at then.  Are you saying that once they have 100% dried with the desiccant then they no longer have a need to be stored with it?  So then could I just put them in a brown bag, in a box, in the closet?  Either I am misunderstanding (which I do not believe I am) or no one is being clear enough.

I'm not looking for an answer that I want to hear, I just want an answer to my question dude.

Yeah dude, I get that.  I already have that taken care of.

Still the question remains to even be recognized.  Can they go into the closet in a box in a bag?

They can but they won't last long. That's why I bolded in an air tight container like jars. You can also vacuum seal them

So basically you could have told me I could take the jar of them I already have in the fridge and just put that in the closet.

Cool, finally.

I worry about airtightness more than I worry about temperature, yes, so if you're already storing them in a container with desiccant in the fridge, you can certainly put that in the closet.  Glad that's cleared up.

Once they are dry they will tend to stay dry, assuming you dried them to snapping.

A lot of dealers keep shrooms in a plastic baggie.

It seems to work :v

That said, I'd throw silica gel in there if I had some (which I do).

It can't hurt and will only help to keep them dry.

No, they definitely don't stay dry.  A QP will put on a couple grams of moisture weight after 2-3 months of sitting around in a zipper ziplock freezer bag.  Maybe you're talking about a different kind of bag or a different amount but I have to re-dry large amounts if it's been a few months, they get a little bendy.
