I want to create electronic music on my PC but I don't want to spend a single cent.

Is there something Open Source or other Freeware out there? Preferably something a n00b can use.
What should I get?

I torrented Ableton years ago and it has been the best program i've ever used.
Been producing for over 5 years now.
I've tried FL Studio and Reason but Ableton is really fluent and natural when it comes to production IMO.
Your computer keyboard can even emulate a midi keyboard, and you can go up octaves by either going down by hitting Z or up by hitting X
And you could also torrent Reason and ReWire it into Ableton, or you can rip youtube videos for their sounds (PC Game Trailers, Movies) anything.
And you can download sample packs so you can have all of your drum hits and even instrument clips that you can manipulate from there.
If you have any questions at al when it comes to music production on the computer, you can pm me anytime.
edit: The only thing i've spent money on when it comes to production is hardware. (Turntables, Monome, Midi keyboard, Launchpad, Microphones, Audio Interface etc.)

You can do layering and some basic manipulation stuff with Audacity, which is a legit free program. I mostly use it to record stuff, but there are different mods for it. There's effects, frequency generators and stuff that you can mess around with, but it's pretty basic.
Mostly posting to see what people suggest here. I am in the market myself.

Look for freeware. If you're going to steal software then I hope you give your music away for free too.

What was the last album you actually paid for?
edit: Because with that logic, you must think downloading music is immoral/illegal too because you are "stealing" from the artist/label.

I paid for Tipper's 'Forward Escape' after torrenting it.
I'm not gonna point fingers and condemn people who see differently from me. I'm just offering my own opinion.
However, it takes considerably more time and resources to program a DAW than it does to produce an album. That comparison is a stretch.
P.S. I give my music away for free, but I use paid licenses on all my VSTs and DAW. (My poop also smells like roses)

If I ever produce something worth listening to, I intend to give away. That said I prefer freeware if its good.

Reaper is a highly functional DAW that can be bought at a reasonable price. Renoise is a Tracker (a kind of DAW) that is also very affordable (last I checked it was around $70) and goes very deep. I know of several famous producers who use it.
Logic is an incredibly powerful package that is only $200 (a screaming deal), and can be used for much more than music production. It makes a great mastering suite, and can even be used for surround sound mixing. Of course, you need a Mac to use it.
These are just some ideas. I don't actually know of any true freeware that compares to the ones listed above.
You can always torrent something, learn it. If it's worth sticking with, then just save up a little money.
I've dropped $2000 in software alone. It quickly becomes an addiction.

Ive been using FL for about 7 years now, I love it. Im going to be forced to learn Pro Tools once I get into school for audio production but thats ok.
Unless you pirate software, your not going to be able to really compose electronic without spending money.

I used to use reaper and reason. Reapers free but reason was pirated, its expensive business as even with reaper you need to buy VSTs. You'll need samples too. I'd suggest ripping it off, most music has something stolen in it even if its just a sample. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure Reaper is no longer free, but it's still cheap.

Hmmm let me be more precise, I want a software that lets me compose it (kinda like MIDI but simpler) rather than play it in realtime.

A lot of DAWs allow for that. Fruity Loops and Ableton are popular ones with quality sequencers. I use Ableton. Fruity Loops is a bit more intuitive for beginners.

You're gonna want to pirate some software. There is probably a good freeware DAW out there but I don't personally know of any to recommend. If you do decide to pirate something, I'd go with Ableton all the way. Very powerful yet very intuitive software. You can do pretty much whatever you want with it. Depending on what kind of music you want to make, FL might be a better choice.
Lemme know if you have any questions I may be able to help you answer. Good luck, electronic music production is an amazing hobby.
