Straw Pasteurization Q
    #22290002 - 09/25/15 08:20 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Is it really necessary to combine both a hot water bath AND add detergent to your water
when you pasteurize straw? Stamets seems to believe that a water bath at 160F is enough
since he mentions that as a sole method in his book. Adding detergent wouldn't be all
that difficult but honestly, why add that step if a hot water bath alone would do the trick?

My setup that I will be using:

You don't need detergent. Detergent is a thing of it's own. You can add basic biodegradable hand soap if you would like to make the water "wetter" and to help loosen up the waxy coating on the straw. The mushrooms will eat the soap. Also you pasteurize straw at 140-145F FOR 1 HR (no longer) ...160-175F numbers are for steaming where there is enough oxygen for the microbes to sustain themselves over a period of many hrs.

Much agreed with what lipa said soap isn't necessary but I use a little any way to help hydrate the straw. Its simple enough that I figure why not?

Yup  I use a little soap also. Doesn't take much effort.
