I fan my SGFC 3 times a day.
I'm 90% positive your supposed to do that after misting. However I only mist once in the morning and once at night. The water evaporation encourages pinning.

So another little update. I've left the jars alone for a couple days and just took a peek at them to see if the myc has thickened up at all and upon looking I spotted what looks to be black mold that is along the top lip near the dry layer of verm. Just looking for verification before I sterilize and dump it. Thanks!

Yeah, it's definitely not the substrate because it wasn't there a couple of days ago. Oh well, I have 2 of the first 5 still so I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Plus I have 12 wide mouths going and they're doing way better than the tall regular mouths. I can see why the regular mouths aren't use in the PF Tek(anymore?). They take a while to colonize thus leaving them more susceptible to contamination. Live, learn, get wide mouths. Lol. Thanks for the input, micro.

OK, so I have a somewhat happy update. I birthed my first cake on Friday and one yesterday(dunked ATM). Now for the somewhat part, I have this kind of "fuzz" growing off of the first cake. Not sure if this is cobweb or another kind of mold or maybe just mycelium because it's either too dry or too wet? Any help would be great because I only have an hour until I have to roll the other cake and throw it in the SGFC. Thank you in advance.

We need a picture bud.
If its not grey its most likely mycelium. I remeber freaking out over that too..

Sorry. I'm on my phone, it doesn't let me post .jpg so I have to upload it to my pictures on here then I copy and paste and post it here. Took me longer than usual. Thanks for the quick response though, much appreciated.

Your looking good man. BUT definitely cut that foil down to a little wider (1") to the cercumfrence of your cake. That fuzzy stuff your worried about is called " aerial mycelium" your cake is is literally stretching for fresh air. I'm experiencing this now. Either you arent fanning enough or your SGFC isn't set up properly dialed in via enough holes at the proper measurements ( 2" x 2" top and bottome side to side) like I'm experiencing.
Keep us posted

OK, that's what I thought. I will definitely cut the foil down, thanks for the heads up. My setup right now is this, a small Rubbermaid tote with 1/4" holes spaced and drilled 2" on all 6 sides, I have dampened perlite that I wet and strained well at about 3.5" high. I've been misting but I'm not quite sure if I'm under/over doing it. I've read when misting to not let it puddle up(I'm assuming that means on top of the cake as well as the foil) so I've been holding the bottle away from the SGFC. When I'm at work I have a fan that blows very lightly that I place on the top of the SGFC. Water it definitely evaporating and then I mist again and fan it manually for a bit. How long should I fan for each time?

Are you letting the fan constantly run on your SGFC?
I mist and fan three times a day. You wanna mist first and then fan right, but if your over misting it won't really allow for evaporation so keep that in mind. It's mostly trial and error and just figuring out what works for your grow.
Your SGFC sounds good. I'd recommend another half inch of perlite to make it 4" total. I have a large tote so I have 5" of perlite.
Mist your cakes till their glistening and Fan for like 45 to 60 seconds.

Yeah, I kept it on constant but it's a very very very light air flow because the fan is messed up but enough to move the air and evaporate the mist. I did this only for Monday and Tuesday while I was at work. I didn't do that today though.
OK, so if I understand correctly now, the fanning is to replace the stale air with fresh air and encourage evaporation and the SGFC is going to do the rest of the evaporating because of the holes drilled into all six sides of the tote?

Don't run a fan on it. It will dry out your perlite. You might want to re wet it. I put my SGFC in the shower for a while. Take out the cakes of course and been quick.
The holes in your SGFC is for FEA. Fanning is too also help with FEA and also to encourage evaporation.

OK, no fan, check. The perlite believe it or not is still very damp. I just got a hygrometer/thermometer from Home Depot so I'm waiting to see what the humidity is in the SGFC. I also picked up a huge bag of perlite as I only had two little bags so I'll add some more to the SGFC.
OK, gotcha. There is a lot of old or inaccurate info out there and I'm just trying to understand the process as I have a shelf full of colonizing jars and these 2 survivors of my first attempt are my trial run.
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

Yeah, it sucks. Lol. Hey quick question on humidity. I can't for the life of me get it up past 70%. Last night I had it at 80% but I added more perlite and it dropped to 70% and won't budge. Any advice on that? Thanks man, you're helping me learn a lot, it's much appreciated.

Don't be too concerned about humidity so long say our getting great FEA.
But to answer your question it sounds like your humidity gauge needs to be calibrated. Your SGFC is most likely at 100% humidity but the gauge is off. The same thing happened to me lol.
Your gauge should have come with instructions to calibrate it but if it didn't google the brand and model for instructions.
Like mine, it wouldnt go past 80% but after calibrating it always reads between between 90-100

Yup, hygrometer was off I did the wet towel test and it didn't go past 80% so I adjusted the screw for 100% humidity. And no, no pins yet. :/

Ah I figured. Well it sounds everything is as it should be.
Keep misting and fanning and you'll have pins in no time I'm sure.
