Glass or Plastic Petri Dishes?
    #22288959 - 09/25/15 03:39 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Im going to try and get into agar but i was wondering whether its more cost effective to buy a 5 pack or glass petri dishes and just sterilize them and reuse, or if i buy plastic ones and just toss em, thanks everyone

Id say go for the 20 packs of plastic plates. They're not too expensive, especially if you buy by the case, and they come sterile which is a huge plus because its one less thing you have to do.
You just have to sterilize your bottle of agar and pour, where as glass plates you have to wrap and sterilize those as well.

Glass plates can be a little heavy and cumbersome too.

I think most of us use disposable plates. You can always use them in conjunction with some no pour plates for the first plate or two (the ones you transfer from that you are just going to toss anyways) to be a little more economical. Or, you could get some glass ones for this purpose too.

Also, depending on how much work you do you would need a whole lot of glass plates because otherwise theyll start getting tied up, if you need to store a culture in the fridge while you're growing it out to test, or if you wanna do strain isolation forget about it man you will go through a stack of plates in a single session

Oh yea no prob

I like the single dish plates because it gives you lots of room to grow out a culture for cutting out wedges.
But the tri section plates are great for cutting down on plates if you are working on strain isolation

Pretty much what im praying to be able to pull off is growing from a dry mushroom. Ive read cloning from dry mushrooms is really hard but im hoping. The plastic petri dishes have the option to be "vented", like this http://www.amazon.com/Karter-Scientific-206D2-Plastic-60x15mm/dp/B005Z4QU5U/ref=pd_sbs_328_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1FG7QVRARC1VVM9H9082&dpID=31RBV%2B9K91L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_ ,or without the vents like this, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015T0LZO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A37SSOMGWCKVU1
which do you think would be better for this?

The vents are like little dividers right? Ive never heard the term vented, I only know sectioned like bi-section pitre, tri section pitre etc that have little wall dividers.

I say for this just go with the regular ones.

You might want to order some antibiotics too, like gentamyacin powder. You mix ,it in with the agar. I think if youre growing from a dry fruit you will wanna run it past an antibiotic agar plate at some point.

I know its possible, its just tricky, but good luck with this!
