flu shots?
    #22288922 - 09/25/15 03:29 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

so i'm about to be starting a new job soon, and this organization requires me to get a flu shot., or wear a mask the entire time i'm working. until "flu season" ends at the end of February.

and i intend to keep this gig going for a very very long time.

i've never had a flu shot in my life and subsequently have never been privy to wear masks, nor have i ever gotten any sort of flu, while being surrounded by sick people.

i understand the concept behind flu shots, they infect you with a shittier strain of whatever is fucking people up, so that your immune system knows whats up... but wouldn't my immune system know whats up when i end up getting in contact with these sick people anyway?

i mean it's going to happen regardless the virus making contact with my system,, so why should i purposely do this to myself?

is it smarter to just wear the mask forever?

i have like 3 weeks to decide before it's the shot or the mask

i'm highly conflicted.

what do, shroomery?

Sounds like a job working in a healthcare related field. Usually, these jobs require a flu shot if you'll be in contact with patients.

I hope this isn't the case and you're doing something else.

Injecting the virus helps your body develop antibodies that will in turn protect your body if you were to contact the virus thereafter.  It doesn't protect against all the viruses out there obviously. Ask your doctor if the vaccine is right for you and not the shroomery....

it's not a weaker strain, it's dead

it is a cocktail of different strains since it mutates so much

i would just get the shot, i'm sure you'll be fine

some people get side effects but it's usually just from the t-cell proliferation

( your immune response to the dead virii )

i'm just getting opinions, broham.

my doctor's position on this matter is yes, get a flu shot. especially because i'm an asthmatic.

but it seems kinda sketchy

Depends on the nature of the job. Either way, the shot is essentially harmless. I'd get it if I were you.

Before assuming your doctor's opinion is "sketchy," you should look into learning the most basic concepts about vaccines and immunogenicity.

i'd hope you got your mmr's as a child and stuff

vaccines aren't exactly new science and i don't see what there is to be worried about

a small chance of a slight fever from your immune response to the vaccine ?

this type of stuff^

is what makes me  go :hmm:

like my parents aren't the vaccinating types, so they're not like yea you should do that. i kinda grew up with that mentality.

then i hear stories about people having negative responses to vaccinations, and/or getting sick from the flu after never before being vaccinated AFTER they have gotten a shot.

and for the record, i had all sorts of meseals, small pox, polio, whateves shots as a kid, all the school mandatory ones

sicker than you've ever been?

did your parents make you wash your hands ten times a day growing up or something? :v

if your immune system flips out that much with a flu shot it's probably good you got it anyway

yet people who do get the vaccine.... still get the flu! whats the fucking point? it doesnt work.

honestly, if the money and job is worth it, i would just get the shot. but it is a ridiculous requirement

If you understand how the immune system works you can see why that happens. Basically your body starts creating lymphocytes in what is called a t-cell response when certain antibodies bind with the dead virus and activate it, mostly via CD4/CD8. Most people won't get these side effects but if your immune system isn't built up enough it can start freaking out and bind to lots of things, thinking it is a foreign invader. This is what happens in autoimmune diseases. In this case it's just the flu shot causing it but I have reason to think the two are related. Here's something I just pulled up from Google, just to give a source:

Gresh said:

it's not the flu :v

edit: oh, or do you mean eventually

in that case yeah; again, influenza mutates so much there are too many strains out there to vaccinate for them all. they generally vaccinate you against the most common ones but you are right in that a different strain could very well still make you sick

which is why i don't bother getting it (i also hardly ever get sick anymore)

Personally, I'd get the flu shot. Mostly because I've always got them and never had an adverse reaction, and fuck wearing a mask everyday. It would drive me mad

But its really up to you. If you can handle wearing a mask everyday, all day (im assuming) then skip the flu shot.

I edited my post a little bit ago.

I thought you meant from the shot, itself.

If you mean after then yeah, that is the flu; see my post above.

Though people often *do* confuse influenza and rhinovirus.

they barely even know how our immune system works.  doesn't take a rocket scientist to speculate that you can't just keep injecting dead virus cells into your body endlessly, something is going to get overloaded, cause and effect.  Besides that there are countless people who get the shot then days/weeks later have problems and big money pays people off to discount/surpress/hide/ect.  Now that's not to say the shots did it, but they are saying the shots are safe and in my book there's a lot more studys that should be done before it gets that stamp.

Use the mask, the mask is 90% worthless btw shit still goes around the sides of them because you can't get a perfect fit every time/most of the time.

Plus look on the bright side you won't have to make fake smiles all day long and the mask will help protect you from things besides the flu as well.  In my opinion anyone in the health field should wear the dam mask anyway because guess why, the patients might not have gotten the shot.  So lets say by chance you got the shot and just happened to get that exact strain of flu breathed in , you can easily pass that shit to patients and the flu shot won't do jack shit about it.  You do not have to be sick to pass the flu, flu's are airborne you inhale its in your lungs and can get passed by the next breath or maybe the one after that or after that....but flu's mutate a lot, by time the lab makes the dam shot its already mutated most likely

so yah wear a mask, every day, even while not in flu season, its healthcare ffs your surrounded by sick people ffs, the logic these healthcare boss's have is that of a child

also everytime my mom gets the flu shot she gets sick, every single time.  she's also allergic to metal, guess whats in flu shots

QFT, and this is why autoimmune diseases are climbing in developed countries.

People aren't getting exposed to as much and their immune systems aren't building up because of it.

That's not how memory B cells work.

They have their own genetic mechanism for recognizing it after vaccination.

Do you know how many antigens your body comes in contact with every day?

You have like a trillion antibodies at any given time.

That just doesn't make sense. Of course it won't 'overload' :v

We have been using vaccines like this for quite a while, now...

People who don't have problems don't speak up; you are listening to the squeaky wheel.

Most people don't have side effects.

Quote:

also everytime my mom gets the flu shot she gets sick, every single time.  she's also allergic to metal, guess whats in flu shots

I doubt that metal allergies are responsible; the only metal that would be there is an organomercury preservative which wouldn't cause such a systemic response. Much more likely, it is an immune response to the dead virus in the shot. Her immune system thinks it is an invader and it binds to antibodies which signal inflammatory cytokines like CD4 and CD8 to generate a T-cell response: the production of more lymphocytes. This is what causes swollen lymph nodes.

Generally people will only have a primary response and your B cells will "remember" the virus in case of re-infection via genetics. Some people, often those with over-active immune systems, can develop a secondary response which causes the cascade of symptoms such as fever and nausea via intracellular signalling. This is generally due to a problem with regulatory cytokines like interferon and interleukin which normally mediate cytokine production. This can lead to problems with allergies (another immune response, often triggered by TNFα) and in the more severe case an autoimmune disease where the body starts attacking its own cells.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2919277/

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2787274/

http://www.webmd.com/parenting/d2n-stopping-germs-12/kids-and-dirt-germs

Oh, and did you know that even sunburns are caused by an immune response?

The UV triggers the inflammatory response via TNFα and signalling in much the same way.
