Desiccant isn't for drying, it's for keeping things dry.  Use a dehydrator and have them dry in 12-24 hours or fan dry them for 2-3 days before storing them with desiccant.  The longer they take to dry, the more oxidation occurs.

I use desiccant for drying. Works fine.

You can wrap the mushrooms in a paper towel and set them in the container with the desiccant. You have to be sure to wrap them in a way you can pull them out without dumping them though.

It's literally.. not intended to dry things that aren't already dry.  It's not very good for it.  Define "works fine".  Do you fan dry first?  How long does the entire process take until they are cracker dry and wont get any drier?

OP just get a cheap ass food dehydrator, put shroomies in, crank that bitch up, and your done. No need to complicate the process. Keep it stupid simple.

YeaYea I think the "desiccant chamber" thing was for people who only have a few grams to dry.

The dessiccant chamber is not to dry wet shrooms. It's to finish drying and to keep them dry. Even if it works fine your wasting money and time. Fan dry or dehydrate them you keep them fresh in a desicant chamber.

I have a desiccant chamber. It takes roughly 24 hours to become cracker dry. I am drying OZ's at a time. Ive been doing it this way for years and never have had a problem.

:whathesaid: Dry with a food dehydrator first, then store with a desiccant to be 100% sure your mushies stay cracker dry.

Lol even I'm like wtf? And my climate is under 10% humidity. I still have to fan dry for 24 hours before doing a desiccant chamber. Once I actually left it in one for 3 days after a fan dry,  it came out to around a qp. I threw it in the oven on low for half an hour. Reweighed a good 12 grams under what it was before. You'd be surprised what 12g of moisture could do to shrooms left for a long time. Moral is dehydrator does it in the shortest amount of time. Heat and moving air is the best way to dehydrate. And it costs 30-40$ for a brand new cheap af one. Used can be pretty damn cheap.

Pounds is exactly when I want the dehydrator.  Maybe we don't all understand cracker dry to be the same thing...

 yeah I can fit about a 3/4 of a p in 1 dehydrator. I got 3. Any that doesn't fit gets put on a rack with a fan for about 24 hours until the first set gets dried, then the 2nd set (now with much less water weight) can get stuffed hard core getting well over 5 pounds dried in about 36 hours.

Yeah I'm not about to accidentally blow damprid all over pounds of mushrooms by bumping this weird ass drying rig the wrong way..

Is it necessary to place your mushies on a screen or can't you just place directly on the damprid. I mean I'm assuming it's in a little packet, not individual beads, and it's supposed to be food safe.

Ok I think I should have clarified first.  I am only putting the mushrooms in the desiccant jar after I have fan dried for two days.  All of my previous harvests are in there and are cracker dry.  No worries, I just want to find a new spot to stash them that won't ruin them.

Really? I usually use 2 d ehydrators but one can handle a whole lot of tubs a lot faster for me than fans and desiccant

I usually rotate my harvest in and out of the d ehydrators, I put the ones I can't fit on box fans until they get their turn so they arent just sitting around.

You mean you didn't follow the rules?  Good job.  Excellent work.  I'm more shocked though that you didn't expect a dehydrator discussion to break out like it does EVERY SINGLE time this thread is made.  Or maybe it's that you expected the thread to disappear instead of continuing on.

What was the question then? desiccant is easy man, fan dry most of the way and then put in an airtight chamber with like damp rid or something.. just don't let them touch
