Are these gymnopilus?
    #22287722 - 09/25/15 09:58 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So, let me stay by saying I'm a new user to this site. I do have some experience in identification but am  just a tiny bit unsure of what I've found here. I believe I've found a very large patch what I believe are a species of gymnopilus. Some were growing it of several old and rotting  trees and others were in large patches in the grass beat the trees.  Please let me know what you think.

Reason for deletion: All wrong. There are probably a dozen or more active...

The only Gymnopilus that is "active," if that is what you are wondering, is Gymnopilus junonius which I don't think any of your images resemble very much.

FALSE ^ many

Is this one of the species whose mycelium glows in the dark?

Correct, they're lacking a ring so Armillaria tabescens it is.

They're a decent substitute for shiitake mushrooms, but make sure to cook a small amount well and try to see if you experience any gastric disturbances from them, some people get the stomach funk from them.  I have never known anyone to have issues with them, but that doesn't mean anything.

Have you actually seen them glow?  I think they either dont glow much, or burn out fast.  I looked in the woods a few weeks ago at night and didn't see anything glowing.

I've seen glowing pieces of wood.
If the glow was caused by armillaria or by something else?

There are many references to armillaria causing "foxfire" out there, some even seem to be from credible sources.

https://blog.mycology.cornell.edu/2010/04/12/this-bark-glows-in-the-dark-bioluminescence-in-mushrooms/

"Foxfire may be any of several fungi, but, almost always, it's the honey mushroom (Armillaria mellea) and related species," says Tom Volk, biology professor at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. "
