Without a casing layer, your block will not be able to transpire much water into its environment. You'll have to keep the humidity as close to 100% without having water drip onto the surface of the substrate. Since there is less available water, you will not get nearly as even a flush. You can try dunking to replace lost water, but then let it drip dry and then pat dry the entire surface. If you put it back too wet you'll get green for sure.

My foaf noticed that if the straw is left under its hole punched plastic wrap and exposed to fruiting conditions it will pin and mushrooms will begin to mature. At that point, the plastic can be removed and the fruits allowed to develop, thus eliminating the casing layer. Very clean harvest btw..

AFOAF has had a lot of success with straw as a substrate.  Yet every time AFOAF cases (verm/peat/lime steralized in oven bag) AFOAF gets green mold.  What techniques are there to fruit without casing layer, any tips or ideas. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Try mixing your casing layer up and then microwaving it a time or two, till it steams.  Most green mold is due to improper cleaning, sterilization, or cultivator-borne spores.  If you let the straw fully colonize, you can fruit directly off of it without a casing layer. I'd recommend working out the problem with the casing layer and enjoy the more bountiful rewards of cased bulk substrates  GOod luck, PM if ya have more questions.
