Hi, yesterday i went to pick mushrooms in a field i had picked them 4 years earlier and they were everywhere this year there was not a single mushroom in the field. I checked the fields nearby and nothing either. Anyone know of any reason why they are no longer in this field as it is the only place i knew to pick them?
Anyway, i need advice in where to look. What type of fields should i look in? How abundant are they? Why aren't they in many fields and is it rare to find a field with them in?
Thanks in advance for the advice?
Also is it for sure mushroom season in the Uk because that could explain why there was none in the field i checked. I found one very very tiny liberty cap and that was it.

Hi there, the season is definitely underway.
Could be empty for any number of reasons, mycellium is too happy and so has no need to fruit, insensitive land management, microclimate causing early or late fruiting.... hard to say really.
They're quite common as mushrooms go although that depends on what part of the country you're in as they definitely have a North and West bias. The south east is predominately arable farmland so not quite as common as in those parts of the country where upland grazing is the norm.
Stick to grazing land (horse, cow and sheep all work) and look out for 'Juncus effusus' grass (google image search), this will let you know the field is damp for a good part of the year.
Also, if you look in a field and there is no fungi of any kind then you may well be wasting your time. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to find any of these in fields that aren't grazed by livestock? I'm guessing it's not but just thought I ponder at the possibility.

I would use the search engine here on shroomery.org, with a few quick searches you can find a plethora of information to peruse at your leisure.
Here's a link you will find handy.

They can grow in any kind of grassland (golf courses, football pitches etc.) but you'll maximize your chances of finding them by sticking to classic habitat (pasture).
