to solve the heating problem, do a search for incubating chambers.

The grey/blue tinge is not normal, I believe. Maybe it could be bruising, but the greyness makes me suspect contamination.

If you get an incubating chamber the next set of jars should go smoother (your friend's friend I mean).

As for an incubation chamber, this is what my friend's dog uses. He has a styrofoam cooler (46 L Morval, not sure if you have something comparable in England) that contains a quart mason jar full of a water/peroxide mixture with an aquarium heater inside. The dog checks the temperature inside every so often and with the heater turned up high, manages to keep the temperature between 85 and 90 degrees farenheit. There are smaller versions of coolers if the cupboard she plans to store them in is really small. I think there are small aquarium heaters too.

As far as the moisture in the jars, my friend's dog says that it's better if the stuff in the jars is too dry instead of too wet. Either way the colonization will be slower but with the dry, there's less chance contams will get started. Grey probably means contamination but maybe not. If they manage to fully colonize and don't smell funny then maybe they are ok.
