A few weeks ago I overheard my college age son talking with his best friend about wanting to try magic mushrooms....well, I've always run my house with an open door, open mind policy, BUT, I am also a 50 year old RN, that's been married to a wonderful/amazing/but ultra-conservative man for 25 years. I jumped into the conversation,( I thank God that my kids will talk to me about anything ), and very quickly realized that I didn't know enough about mushrooms to speak intelligently about them either pro or con. This sent me on a quest to find out all the facts. What I discovered was both surprising and incredibly intriguing. The TED talk about controlled mushroom studies was particularly enlightening. Long story short, a week of study, and I was ready to go mushroom hunting, both for myself, and for my son, who is having college related stress & anxiety. The fact that all studies show that you would have to eat a matter of POUNDS of mushrooms to OD, was really important to the nurse in me. I've always believed that there is a level of acceptable risk in all activities, and the risk associated with mushrooms is practically nonexistent. First day out I found huge mushrooms within about 20yards of my pasture fence. OMG, florida psilocybin cubes are SO easy to positively identify. I did spore prints just to be sure, and yep, I'd found my first shrooms. I've taken notes on my first two trips, and I will post those later, but for now, I am just amazed that my beloved horse, that has always brought me so much joy and peace, also poops magic mushrooms. I always knew he was the best horse on the planet !!!!!!!!

Good story over all though I do have one issue with something you said. That the risk is basically non-existent. From an OD stand point you're right, but never underestimate psychedelics, especially shrooms. They are powerful mind altering substances and one should be aware of the risks whether remote or not. I really only bring it up because not fully addressing or acknowledging the risk can have severe downsides. For instance, someone on their first real trip (not just a mild dipping of the toes) should not be out walking the streets. I definitely don't mean to discourage you or anyone else from using them, just don't do it the under the assumption it's absolutely safe to do it regardless of circumstances.

Thank you, and you are absolutely right ! I was referring only to the chances of an actual overdose. That being said, physical & emotional safety are huge concerns that must be carefully addressed.

Are you familiar with the term "troll". It's an inside joke of a recent troll. I wouldn't pay it too much attention. It's about HPPD though. Troll is convinced like 99.9999999% of people who use psychedelics develop this condition.

Welcome to the Shroomery, you seem awesome from that first post. Hope you stick around and enjoy your experimentation with mushrooms. Also, I love the name; is it a reference to Countess Bathory, Bathory the band, or something else entirely?

I just think it's funny how the thread title is like ripped from the headline of some teen magazine cover.

Now I'm off to search the web and figure out what HPPD is. I thought I'd done loads of mushroom research, but I never came across that term. Its so hard to assess risk when I don't know all the right questions to ask, and I hate not knowing !!! Thank you again for your time, attention & warning

Dont worry about HPPD too much. Its most likely after binge use, and a mix with other drugs. As long as you treat the mushroom like a tool, not a toy, you should be fine and never have to worry about HPPD.

This completely.
Op i was kidding about hppd, but more research is always good. I would say hppd is kinda like spending all day on a merry go round. At some points afterwards you might kinda feel like your spinning around still, but does it affect anything? No it doesn't. Idgaf what some people say about it, most of the people who complain about it are just looking for any excuse to bitch.
The merry go round exa.ple might even be overstating it. More like staring at a bright light for a while and then looking away. Theres something slightly off, but it doesn't effect anything. If you or your kids are mentally stable they will be fine.

Exactly what I was going for I can't believe I missed out on psilocybin in the 80's.

I could be wrong, but given that he quoted my post about BC being a troll, I'm assuming he meant BC's thread title was a rip off of a teen mag trying to warn kids of the dangers of drugs.
This is the thread in question: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22248893/fpart/1/vc/1
"HPPD: the dirty little secret that psychedelic users have swept under the rug"
It really does sound it was stripped straight from the cover of some teen mag.
Yours doesn't really sound like it came from a magazine.

If you have a question I'll answer it, but there are so many inside jokes and culture specific phenomenon here, that it's extremely difficult to even know the majority of it. There are a lot of things even I still don't understand. The blue cookie monster graemlin for instance, I have a general idea of the context it's used in but I don't really understand exactly it's meaning.
