Pressure cooker question

Hi all, new poster here. I went out and bought a pressure cooker and am unsure if I bought one that I can even use for sterilization. I have no experience with pressure cookers. It is a Faberware electric 6 quart. It has 9 settings for different types of foods and there is no mention of PSI in the manual. I'm confused as to what setting to use, whether to use the provided metal rack to set the jars on, and whether I just need to go get a different one or not. I can post a picture of it if someone can explain how to post pictures. Forgive me for my forum incompetence. I searched the site quite a bit and couldn't find any mention of a pressure cooker like the one I have. I would appreciate any guidance.

I can answer.  Most electrics top off at 12.5 psi on high.  You will have to run it a lot longer than a regular PC that can reach 15psi and beyond.  I would run it on steam mode on high if it's anything like my instantduo60.  However you will find you can't fit much in there and you will eventually buy a bigger PC.  I went to a 915 and just bought a bigger 925, so expect that to happen if you stick with the hobby.

I use the electric one for my agar plates now.

hmmm, I know that my first pressure cooker only had two settings. One labeled "1" and the other "2." Turned out it stood for atmospheres of pressure. Perhaps your cooker uses atmospheres as its unit of pressure as well?

Though I don't see any mention of psi, it says it gets up to 250F which makes it ~ 15psi.

I don't know any electric pressure cooker that goes to 15psi.

Well, I guess it's about time then ;3

I'm just going off the manual; if it reaches 250F it is somewhere around 15psi.

Actual number will vary of course, due to atmospheric pressure.

Yea that's a legit sterilizer.  I know the type he's talking about.  The very small electric pc's.  Mine is 6 quart too.  You can fit 1 quart jar inside if you tilt it just right.  They're pretty much childs play.  Take a look at mine.  I'm guessing his very similar.

The only settings available are the 9 food settings. Veggies, meats, and so on. Each setting has a set time of 30 minutes or less. The only setting with a longer time is the "slow cook" setting, which goes to 4 hours. So the slow cook seems like the most logical setting to use as far as time goes but I am not sure if it will be as efficient as some of the other settings. It looks similar to midnight's. I'm at work right now but when I go home for lunch I can snap a pic and get the model number. I tried looking for my model on the web and couldn't find the exact one. It's labeled as a 7 in 1. I'm guessing I should just use the slow cook setting for a couple hours but I'm not sure.

slow cook sounds like 'cook longer at a lower heat'

without taking it apart and modifying the temperature control by shorting with a resistor you would need a way to actually set the time, it doesn't have that ability?

as in, they pre-decided the cooking times *for you* ???

that would be messed up

I'll take another look at it at lunch but I messed around with it and read the manual last night and it appears to be set times only. If I find out differently and can adjust the times, which setting should I use(meats, rice, veggies, etc.) or would that even matter? And how long?

Slow cook won't get it done. You'd be better off just using a pot on the stove on high and even that won't get it done for grains.

Mine has preset times but also allows you to increase it etc.

I suggest getting yourself a cheap All American.  I just scored one for 118 shipped.  Look on fleabay.

Nevermind.  Yea that PC sucks man.  Not useful at all if you can't increase the times.  I suppose you could activate it twice (just select the feature that has the most time.

Doesn't the + button add on time????  Mine does.

ie. hit the fish button then try pressing the + before hittin start.
What does the menu button bring up also.

I can't believe there isn't just a steam "pressure cooker" function button.

Yes sorry I just found out how to use the time add button. So that problem is solved. My last few questions are does it matter which food setting I use? Also, how much water should I put in and should I use the metal rack or just set the jars on a washcloth? And how long should they sterilize?

Can you just press time cook and then + or will it not let you do that without hitting one of the function buttons below?

What does the menu button do?

If you had to choose I would choose the Meat one.
Mine has an adjust button which will alternate between low medium and high but like I said it also has a straight up steam function that I hit then I hit adjust so it will go to the high setting then + to add on the time I want.

These lose very little water.  Definitely use the metal rack and set your jars on that.  Just bring the water level just up to the bottom of your jars that will be enough.

The menu button just selects which setting you want. I'll go ahead and set it to meat for what 2 hours?

depends on what you have in your jar but at least 2 hours for grains.
I mean, some guys do 2 hours in a real PC at 15psi.  I do 90 minutes at 20psi which is sterilization point.

See what I'm saying?  You can porbably fit one quart jar in there.  I forget pints... but say you want to do a montotub you need about 5 quarts of spawn.  That's a lot of time invested not to mention energy/$$$$$ spent in making them.  The AA925 for example can do 10 quart jars at one time.  So a 90 minute run vs 10 hours.  Buy a good PC man.
