Capitalism at work
    #22279897 - 09/23/15 05:49 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Quote:

Turing Pharmaceuticals and its CEO Martin Shkreli were the subject of significant criticism on Monday after the company boosted the price of the toxoplasmosis treatment Daraprim by over 5,000% after acquiring the drug in August... they increased the cost of Daraprim to $750 a pill from $13.50.

http://fortune.com/2015/09/21/turing-pharmaceuticals-martin-shkreli-response/

This asshole bought the rights to a drug primarily used in AIDs patients when then get certain infections, and raised the price astronomically. Quite the tenacious 'Entrepreneur', hmm? Or better yet, a Capitalist.

So, just so I'm clear on this, you two don't want pharmaceutical companies to raise money for research and development? Is that right?

Once everyone who needs the drug dies because they can't afford it anymore, how will he raise money to make a better drug?

Hell now that more than half of the people who are on it can't afford it he won't make a dime...

"I guess some people think Daraprim access will decline instead of increase. I guarantee better access at lower prices to patients than ever," tweeted Shkreli."

Um....duh.At least he's dropping the price.

^^  Considering the patent expired and this is a natural monopoly created by lack of competition I think BBW is right on the money.

Apparently this is the generic.  No one's competing with him so he's jacking up the price because he can.

It is good to see the whole system is collapsing. This has been happening for some time now, people are waking up to the fact that we haven't had a free market system in a long, long time.

Let's burn down the mansions and display the CEO's in the street! :lookslucrative:

A side effect of Capitalism.

Marx predicted everything would play out exactly as it has, with regard to Capitalism.

Without Capitalism those "generic medications" wouldn't exist to compete with the brand name drugs.

Without Capitalism, this drug wouldn't even exist because nobody would take the time and money to develop it.

Fuck I love Capitalism.

i always get a laugh out of people who see capitalism as a sort of social darwinism, that guarantees the most compensation to the most valuable people etc etc.  anyone can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and the cream rises to the top yadda yadda yadda.  The whole mentality ignores inheritance. Even if there were a law tomorrow outlawing any kind of inheritance, the children of wealthy people would naturally be the beneficiaries of the privileges of wealth(at least as children).  Therefore, capitalism can only live up to the ruggedly fair ideals that people often ascribe to it for one hypothetical generation at most, and could only yield the true "cream" if everyone was stripped of all wealth, or had wealth redistributed equitably before the exercise was started.

Russia produced many many drugs while under Communism. So did the Nazi's under Fascism. Many of which we use today. Capitalism is just another economic system, and it is shaking the entire world negatively.

How was Russia for the citizens during communism? Did they get access to these newly developed Russian communism drugs as if it were a free market?

R&D can be performed by governments but at a much greater cost to everyone involved- and a much worse result

Capitalism is wonderful.
