We have a few farmer's markets, several produce stands, and a few really great organic farms around here. I get fruits and veggies once a week from my favorite roadside stand. It is all affordable and decent food grown in my state, although it is not organic.
We also have one food co-OP and another produce store with produce grown within eight hours of here. If you aren't lazy here you can also pick lots of berries, apples, leaks, fiddleheads, morrels, and asparagus.
Wintertime is a different story. Slim pickings during the cold months.

Everytime ive bought stuff I always notice them smurking, its not a smile, its like this evil smurk like they just did something bad and only they know what it is
I was going fairly regularly to get grass fed meat, first couple times the meat was great, then it started tasting like dog shit, then I wanted to try something different and got a lamb roast. I get it home and its a fucking lamb knee or some shit and all the dam meat has little tiny pieces of bone in it in every bit like the fukin lamb had really bad knee's that caused splinters everywhere in the meat around them. Shit was like $30-$40 too
it just drives me insane all the horrible food out there and you have no dam idea where its been
The Farmer's Market in the big city here has changed the rules to where you have to actually grow the produce/make the crafts in order to sell it there. There are also a lot of people that set up on the side of the highways around here and sell things. I don't get it. I'll brake for a truckload of local watermelon, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, tomatoes, etc.

It's the bromelain. Bromelain is a proteolitic enzyme that is found in pineapple. For the chemistry noobs, that is a protein that destroys other proteins. The protein is denatured in the stomach but active in the mouth.
So basically, as you eat pineapple, the pineapple eats you too!

That's true... I went into a department store and they had the whole bottom floor dedicated to selling fancy produce.. on display and shit like jewelry. A watermelon was $100. People give them as gifts there. It's the best damn watermelon you've ever had though. But.. you can still go to the grocery store and get regular priced produce.. and it's still fucking amazing. I dunno what it is.. they must just have better soil quality / growing techniques on average.

They care. If you take a day off just to watch the cherry blossom you'd probably be a pretty solid farmer.

I think that speaks to the walmartization of produce and how you get what you pay for.
