XL Monotub Grow Experiment! 1

So I've always been a little curious about how a really big monotub would perform compared to a normal sized one. So I bit the bullet, bought a 105 qt sterilite tub from walmart, and picked out my 13 best looking quart jars of spawn.

I decided to buy a different type of coir called "Black Gold." It seems like decent quality, and I don't have to chip away at those 5kg compressed bricks which makes things a lot easier. Normally, I used 650g of coir, 2 quarts of dry coarse vermiculite, and 1/2 quart of pelletized gypsum. For this XL mono, I used double that quantity, which comes out to roughly 20-24 quarts of bulk substrate when fully hydrated. I pasteurized on the stove as normal for 90 minutes at 140-170 degrees.

I drilled six 1.5" holes at substrate level and four 2" holes up high to ensure adequate FAE. Initially, I was concerned that my roughly 35 quarts of spawn and bulk would end up being too deep, but the substrate depth came out to exactly 3.5".
I'm interested to see the outcome of this, but contamination is definitely a concern. All it takes is one bad jar, and everything'll bust. They say that you should aim for one dry ounce per quart of spawn used on the first flush, but I seriously doubt that will be the case. Once it's done colonizing, I plan on casing before introducing to fruiting conditions. I haven't seen too many other big mono's like this, so feel free to post a link if you know of any. Wish me luck!

Thanks! I was planning on using a 150 qt tub and using 3x the normal amount of spawn and bulk, but I thought that was too much of a spawn investment. Plus, none of the large tubs I could find were clear, and I was just too lazy to modify the lid.

I exclusively use that same 105 tub (many of them!) , with almost the exact same hole size and placement.
My hint is this: the large lid provides too much FAE, during colonization. My solution is to secure the lid with 6 "bulldog" stationary clips. 3 along each long side. I pull them off, when I pull my tape, and polyfil the holes. Find them at a dollar store, for cheap.

Nice, ive been wondering about the yeild difference between big and small tubs if there is a difference.
It would be interesting to build like a 4'x5' box lined in plastic and used like a mono but use fans for big computeer fans for fae.

No, no I don't. I really don't want to have to buy a second dehydrator new, so I've been keeping an eye out on CL and at thrift stores. I got lucky and found the one I currently have at a thrift store for 99 cents.

IME, no more than fanning once a day is really necessary.
Just, if it isn't cased you might want to worry about humidity.
It can't hurt as long as enough moisture is there.
Too much gas exchange though, and you'll exchange the H2O(g) right out of it.
With casing, spraying the sides or misting was enough for me but straw I had to be a bit more careful.

You can always just get Damp Rid and put it in a styrofoam box
use something like a net or plastic screen to hold the mushrooms up
it will absorb water but the mushrooms won't absorb magnesium sulphate this way

I bet that looks cool, just a huge mushie carpet lol. Ive been wanting to try a straw log for cubes but am worried about contams. Although I just got some oysters and lionsmane so I might try straw with oysters and if I do might as well give it a try with cubes to. Whats your exp with straw like? Worth it? And for a huge mono would that be a good way to go?

I actually have no experience with straw, sorry.
