I think I found some Psilocybe medullosa!! (now confirmed) * 2
    #22279072 - 09/23/15 04:20 PM (1 year, 9 months ago)

Today, I went to check out my C. smithii habitats, but didn't find any. On my way back I was close to a cow pasture where I knew I could probably find some liberty caps, so I decided to have a look. The farm owner cut down some pines a couple of years back to make the pasture bigger, a lot of twigs (hard, not decomposed wood) has been left where I walked toward the older more grassy areas. But there was some P. acuminatus and P. papilionaceus growing there, and some Mycena, and suddenly I noticed something else that made my day! Since there aren't many photos around to compare with, I'm not 100% but based on Mikaels photos from Finland it feels like I have found some Psilocybe medullosa! :omgawesome:

Habitat: Growing from spruce wood in a cow pasture located in Västergötland, Sweden

Cap: Very sticky. Breaks of from the stipe very easy. Could perhaps have a pellicle, but breaks before it gets expanded enough to analyze more closely.

Stipe: White, some have fibrils. No bluing noticed.

Smell: EXACTLY like liberty caps. And strong! This is so weird but at the same time makes some sense, perhaps more Psilocybes smell the same, all dough P. cubensis are not even close.

Together with a cousin. It would have been even better if the libery cap where just as wet and showed some striation.

That looks a lot like the habitat that I find pelliculosa in.
Awesome pictures man! Awesome find!
Do those mushrooms have a separable pellicle?

Some of those specimens look very similar to P. pelliculosa, as was pointed out. Some don't.

K, you should take photos of spore prints and do microscopy on this collection. It's worth it.

Can't tell for sure. I actually mentioned that:

The stickiness suggest some kind of layer similar to libs, but no, not really the same. Chunks of the caps breaks free very easy.

Spore prints are in the making. Not HQ spore prints made for growing but I need to see check the color.

The caps are hygrophanous, shows clearly after drying them a couple of hours:

I can't wait to see those. This is exciting. Hope the prints are fat enough to tell. Weak prints from brown-spored mushrooms can
be really hard to tell apart. Please leave them printing for a while. I can't think of any other contenders than Galerina, but as said
if the print is sufficient it should be no problem distinguishing. And of course, you know who to send these to for microscopy.

They are the European version of Psilocybe silvatica.

So PNW'ers take note, look for these mushrooms.

They were weak, but dark brown.

According to this study, yes. But I don't know the potency.

Thanks Mikael! You know, If you haven't found them before and showed us your photos, I would just have looked at these mushrooms for a second and then moved on thinking it was nothing interesting.

Alcohol is not a good combination drug when it comes to evaluating other drugs, you kind of spoiled this rare opportunity... But a single gram would probably been a low dose anyway. I suspected that they weren't very active, since I have seen no bluing, but on the other hand, only one in a hundred or so liberty caps get blue due to the minimal amount of psilocin. Could be the same thing here, more psilocybin than psilocin. Good to hear that you didn't notice any poisonous effects anyway. Unknown mushrooms are always a risk.

So.. I went out to find some more and just came home with this. I found them just a few meters away from the spot I found yesterday:

I also walked a few km to some big clearings in the forest with lots of Spruce twigs/chips but found nothing else but this (well except Mycena etc.) , to show beginners that there is a lot of look-a-likes out there. This is a Hypholoma species I believe.

One of the things that can be done to assist in the bluing process, is to place them in a tupperware container with a lid that has pre-drilled holes in it (or saran wrap/aluminum foil with holes). By sitting in the fridge for a few hours, bluing may become evident.

Also, examine the stipe bases for tiny, bluing primordia.

Many species of mushrooms containing psilocybin also contain lesser amounts of the analog compounds baeocystin and norbaeocystin, chemicals thought to be biogenic precursors. Although most species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms bruise blue when handled or damaged due to the oxidization of phenolic compounds, this reaction is not a definitive method of identification or determining a mushroom's potency.

Not all active mushrooms bruise blue. He did mention that the mushrooms smelled farinaceous like P. semilanceata

Yeah I have been keen to find P. silvatica/medullosa for years and it was on species that was on my wanted list. So when I was in mycology school a few years ago I was able to find them.

Well I rarely take mushrooms if Im not drunk, I mean beer and semis are my favorite combo :hehehe: but I know that many might think different.

And yeah really nice pics as well, keep em coming. It seems that my spot dont fruit anymore..

Apparently they are very weak so I guess one would probably need at least 3-4 times as much as with P. semilanceata.

Quote:

I find a surprisingly high amount of bluing liberty caps in my spots. Quite often there is quite strong bluing on all parts of
the stem, and blue spots on some caps as well. I find this mainly in larger specimens.

They are beauties! But you really need to detect that pellicle, that is obviously mega essential in this case.
If it is hard to observe when you split the cap edge, try separating it with a pen knife, razor or perhaps a needle.
Guzman writes of P. silvatica "pellicle separable and tenacious", but I'm not sure if this applies to P. medullosa.

Did you perchance observe any alder or were there only conifer trees nearby?

Yeah, I will try the next time I have fresh mushrooms.

Quote:

They grew from mainly Picea abies I believe, perhaps a Pinus sylvestris or two could be present, but I don't think so. I have to check more carefully next time. There are some alder about hundred meters away, but I don't think it was present among the trees that were cut down.

Heres the best sporeprint. Very weak, but good enough to see the color. The white paper have good balanced whiteness on the photo, so I think we can trust the color pretty well.
