Saudi Arabia 'chosen to head key UN human rights panel'

You would think this kind of news would be an April fools joke. But it's not.
The Saudis are the head of the Human Rights panel.... How impossibly idiotic could that be? Oh and also, to add to it. The Saudis have criticized Norway on its human right record. Can you believe it????
Women have no rights, they still flog and whip people, the death penalty applies to children, brutal laws etc.... And they get to defend the human rights in the UN....
I don't know how many bribes were needed to make that non-sense happen but no sane person would pull a dumass move like that.
I always thought the UN was a joke, but now this is just beyond joke.
WTF UN???

The UN is a joke. Always has been. I think Libya led this panel once. Just go away and get the fuck out of my town.

No, not blaming that idiocy on the UN. Merely stating that all things have become a joke, a really bad joke, where the punchline doesn't make much sense.

In Saudi Arabia they have the gumption to stand up to sorcerers. It is absolutely disgusting how in other nations sorcery is now permitted. We are infested with sorcerers and sorcery is a huge social problem. In Saudi Arabia they execute sorcerers in the public square, I am considering moving there to get away from all the sorcery.

The U.N was created to maintain the status quo post WW2. It was founded by the permanent security council members, for the permanent security council members.(and their friends). Saudi Arabia is one of our "friends". If things keep going the way they have been, (in eastern europe) and the U.N. is going to cease to exist maybe. I mean, it's purpose is to stop anyone who wasn't a major power after the war, from ever becoming one, or expanding territory. that's all well and good when its just proxy wars in vietnam, or afghanistan, or north africa, or asia minor. However, if another war were to break out between major powers(imagine Russia expanding into the rest of ukraine while nobody is paying attention, and then slowly expanding to the north)The U.N. would be paralyzed, because a security council member would surely be involved. Thats fine by me i guess, i live in a security council country after all, but i never understood why all the little countries went along with the whole U.N. idea.

Saudi human right are far better than Norway. Norway doesn't even flog of whip guilty adulterers or behead homosexuals. I think a world where those scum balls are treated appropriatly is fine. Kudos to Arabia! I'm sure they'll do a fine job promoting moral culture and appropriate rather than irresponsible rights in society.

Still though would you steal if the penalty was cutting off your fucking hand? Tell me that isn't a deterrent. All you conservatives claim you are tough on crime, but SA is fucking biblical on it. I actually want the guy who stole my bike to get his hand chopped off too. If he gets caught he laughs at the so called consequences here, I bet criminals in Saudi aren't laughing.

Here in the states little kids actually grow up dreaming of joining a gang and being a thug. In Saudi Arabia kids pity the criminal, thief, and thug for their lack of hands and feet.

As far back as the Ancient Laws of China, the death penalty has been established as a punishment for crimes. In the 18th Century BC, the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon codified the death penalty for twenty five different crimes, although murder was not one of them. The first death sentence historically recorded occurred in 16th Century BC Egypt where the wrongdoer, a member of nobility, was accused of magic, and ordered to take his own life. During this period non-nobility was usually killed with an ax.
In the 14th Century BC, the Hittite Code also prescribed the death penalty. The 7th Century BC Draconian Code of Athens made death the penalty for every crime committed. In the 5th Century BC, the Roman Law of the Twelve Tablets codified the death penalty. Again, the death penalty was different for nobility, freemen and slaves and was punishment for crimes such as the publication of libels and insulting songs, the cutting or grazing of crops planted by a farmer, the burning [of] a house or a stack of corn near a house, cheating by a patron of his client, perjury, making disturbances at night in the city, willful murder of a freeman or a parent, or theft by a slave.
punishments have always been absurdly strict, and yet there have always been criminals. seems like that deterrent effect theory hasn't worked out too well for the last 10k years or so...

Not really stupid and pathetic. FRom a resrouce and financial aspect they build them up by buying out their primary resource and capitilize on their financial ruin once they start to run out of it. There is a very obvious reason why the states sits on one of the largest oil reserves in the world while it suck Saudi Arabia dry, and multiples its enemies at the same time.

Crime was lower in medieval times. Therefore it worked. Show me where cutting off hands for stealing has increased crime. Even if one person thinks twice before the crime it was a deterrent. It's impossible to eradicate crime with any method, crime always has and always will exist. I just want to lower it. Don't give me this BS that crime still exists therefore it didn't work. No is claiming it will make crime go away. I bet I could leave my bike unlocked in Riyadh all day and night.

I don't think cutting off a limb is a fair punishment for stealing. Locking someone up sounds about right. Also, wouldn't you rather put criminals to work in jail? If you are gonna chop off their hand, and render them much more useless society, what is stopping you from just wanting to kill them? Save society money.

You are dense. You make outlandish statements like there has always been crime and therefore harsh punishment doesn't matter in detering crime, while our crime rates are far higher Then demand sources when your logic is about as bad as I've ever seen. Hypocrisy much?

You are right. Street crime in Saudi Arabia is almost unheard of. You could leave your ipad taped to your unlocked bike and expect to find it all intact the next day. Even in a country like Singapore street crime is at quite a low level. Around here every train is vandalized and "tagged" by scum bags. In Singapore a single incident of vandalism is nationwide news and even results in manhunts for the capture of the guilty culprit.
My guess is that people against punishing thieves are themselves thieves. They just don't want to recieve the just punishment for their own offenses. They just laugh at justice and go about their life of petty crime and shoplifting sprees.

or they don't wish for manhunt's over eye witness testimony, but regardless, you may have a point somewhere in that diatribe.

Than they were in 1900 for that matter. I don't think they had yet mastered statistical reporting in medieval days. The oldest actual stats I've seen were from the 1880's era including what could be considered the old west or the so called "wild west". Crimes were a lot less common in those days. They had some notable outlaws sure, but they also had very low property crime and murder rates in general. Crime rates really spike in the 1920's with prohibition and never really go back down. Somehow property crimes and violent crimes went up along with prohibition offenses, sort of a culture of lawlessness which is much worse now than ever before. Do not ask for my sources as I'm going from memory, its several years since I studied this in historical context for a cultural anthropology project I did on the effects of prohibition damaging society.

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/23/us/historical-study-of-homicide-and-cities-surprises-the-experts.html
Quote:
Historians now say that homicide rates were extraordinarily high in Europe during the Middle Ages -- and high in the United States during the early 19th century -- then declined steadily until the 1960's. And for centuries, it was villages that were often the scenes of violence.
These findings, published in recent papers and presented earlier this month at the annual conference of the Social Science History Association here, contradict a basic tenet of criminology, that violence is endemic to densely packed urban and industrial centers where traditional social ties and values necessarily break down. The new research should "undermine the basic claim that the city, with its anonymity and crowding, is in and of itself the factor in causing violence," said Joan McCord, a professor of criminal justice at Temple University and a past president of the American Society of Criminology.
Eric H. Monkkonen, a professor of American urban history at the University of California at Los Angeles, said: "What we are finding is that violence is not an immutable human problem. There really has been a civilizing process" in which, scholars say, an increase in state power and courtly manners beginning in the 16th and 17th centuries helped curb impulsive, violent behavior.
Professor Stone has estimated that the homicide rate in medieval England was on average 10 times that of 20th century England. A study of the university town of Oxford in the 1340's showed an extraordinarily high annual rate of about 110 per 100,000 people.

There were less laws and a lot less people. So yes, the most likely was less crime in medieval times

Yeah I mean, instead of committing murder, it was completely legal to duel someone. That alone would have solved/stopped so many crimes.

My university let in a shit ton of Saudi Arabians right after the ban got lifted because everyone knows most of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudi nationals.
Most people's views on Saudis are completely false. I actually have a friend who is from there and he was really chill. he had like 20 brothers and sisters or some shit and his dad worked in Oil (go figure). He is fucking jacked as fuck too. Always was working out and wasn't anti american at all. They fucking love america. There was this other one that had an Obama tattoo and a fucking tupac tattoo. He was okay but the tattoos were so bad it was hard to ignore lmao. He even had a fucking American flag tattoo. I honestly think he got them before coming to college to fit in.
So saying they don't idolize gangsters or thugs isn't correct. they were almost all into rap and shit. They really do think they are black. Some of them were fucking weird as fuck and barbaric. I watched one chase another one with a knife saying he was going to cut his head off. Good think my Pakistani friend spoke arabic so he was able to diffuse that shit and had to tell them you can't get away with shit like that in america. lmao.
It was pretty true too about how rich some of them were. I watched one buy a GTO (the tupac tattoo guy) spontaneously. Funny he bought an American car.
Also they all caved into the College ways. Almost all of the ones I saw would get wasted. It was funny as fuck seeing some super muslims drinking. I saw a few get addicted to cocaine and a lot of them smoked a shit ton of weed.
Long story short, They are actually pretty normal. Many of the ones I met spoke good English. Which is an accomplishment considering most of the Asians I met in their foreign exchange circle could barely form a sentence. haha. They all caved into American culture the second they landed here. Good times haha
( i think the link between them being all terroists stems from them becoming so Americanized that some right wing nuts there are super pissed off about it. If you research the Saudi royal family, many of the former kings were party animals getting fucking wasted and blowing 1 mill per hand at blackjack )

The UN is irrelevant, I'm sure this is intended to somehow appease the House of Saud. Their oil is a finite resource, and when it runs out those fuckers will go right back to living in the stone age.

When I was in Singapore, they found a mutilated body of a woman in a trashbag and she was obviously sexually assaulted. There were also a string of robberies where people were hit in the back of the head with glass bottles, so that's what was on the news.

I have a friend who goes to Saudi Arabia every year to visit family, and that's where he first smoked weed. Apparently they have pretty decent weed, and tons of people smoke down there. Saudi arabia also has some of the toughest drug laws.
