I really like the oat water recipe. Can you add food coloring to it? If so has anyone done it and what color do you think contrasts the myc best?

yes you can add food coloring to oat waters. dark colors work best like green or blue. sometimes I just put one drop of every color and its comes out real dark.

Hey Munch, have you ever seen something like this:

That was 25 ml of oat water to 125 ml of water to 3 grams of agar. Ratios are slightly off but I wanted the same kind of consistency as pasty's tek or even a little stiffer as these were for already fruited cultures.
It's expanded way past that, I think it's myc. First time I've used food coloring in my grain water and I got this weird color thing goin' on.
Wish I had pics to show you what they look like now but I'm about 3 hours away from home

We used to do that with the last Easter egg! It always came out hideous, an awful bilious green almost olive drab. Ugly as shit. Every year it could win the ugliest dog contest, and it was always our favorite egg. I gotta try that on some agar plates--which I am going to have to do today because I can't get the goddamn mix right for the cheap powder agar I have too much of.
I prefer green, but red works for me, too. The wife bought some weird NEON! shit that doesn't work nearly as well for some reason.
We're going to find out today how wet is too wet. The agar is solid, but slides around too much. I wanted it wet and a bit less nutritious, but I may have gone too far. It happens. It's trial and error.
Let's see some pictures of some truly awful pasty plates!

I can't help it!

Dude, that is weird looking shit. In the past four or five months, I've seen a LOT of cultures both here and my own. Nothing looked like that. I've had a few times when the food coloring threw me off and I thought it might be contaminated and weren't, but none that looked like that. Although maybe when I did fc with GWA I thought it was contamed but wasn't. Not like that.

I've used every color of the rainbow.
Dark Red, Dark Green or Purple work best.
I used black for a while but it's impossible to tell satellites.
Some I Don't Even Fucking Know plates:
Smelled like rotten fucking eggs that sat in gym socks for a year.

Still no idea what this is.
Straight bacteria:

Aspergillus:

How I stopped using rye:

Back in the day:

I had a good pic of Aspergillus Niger (Black Mold) somewhere but I'm way too lazy to go through all these pages lol.
Here's a whole post on it:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20896028#20896028
Never seen anything like it either but I had a CRS plate made with the same formula as these petris and they did exactly the same thing. I transferred away two days ago to a pasty plate for science and they're just starting leap off today and all look clean

Today I did another test and checkup on my Stare sticks. The intended goal is to have myc crawl up and colonize enough of the toothpick to be able to transfer myc without a scalpel and flame sterilizing anything. It's quicker to transfer, so it should shorten the window of contamination.
I stuck a toothpick in my agar at a slant and dropped a tiny wedge at the end of it. When colonized, I simply transfer it to a clean plate.
Here's an original colonized stick (not the actual plate used for the transfers below):
Here's the receiving plate right after:

And here's the receiving plate today (5 days after initial transfer):

Looks pretty good, I'd say. I need to figure out the best dimensions of the sticks so I can get them in the center of the plate better. That way I can make a transfer before the myc hits the edge, allowing me to use the plate for an LI or wedge or something.

Yeah unfortunately I was opening those first few, I couldn't see through the condensation. Plus i made those plates too thick so i wasn't able to shine a light on it to see through it.
But that red plate was one of 3 I did with food coloring, the other two I got some good growth on(one of them started growth right on the edge of the plate), which i transfered to 4 new plates. Those 4 plates im not even going to look at for a week. I need to stop being so impatient lol.
and yes i will be tossing them. i might keep them around for another week though(in another part of the house) just for an experiment to see what the white plate with the dot turns into. Those white plates smell extremely sweet, its not a good sweet smell.

No i didn't intentionally smell them, when i opened them, the smell was that strong. Thats when I knew i fucked up somewhere.
I won't open them at all now unless I'm transferring. I just use less agar so i can shine a light through it to see growth, or usually after a week the condensation is cleared up enough to actually see whats going on in there.
But my most recent plates i did pretty good at not having too much condensation in them.
Also once the newest plates are good and ready, i will decide if i should do one more transfer or actually start knocking up my grains. Will be my first run at grains and panama strain.

I think so. This pin I just tried to clone on oat water looks similar. very very fine growth on mine thats almost imperceptible. you can only see it when you get some light reflecting off it. i dont think its got enough nutes in the mix. gonna switch to potato flakes and honey and do some transfers.

It depends on where you cut it. But dude, you shouldn't be transferring from plates like that really. Take a look at tons of clean agar plates. Even to the untrained eye and new agar-ologist, your plates are so glaringly contaminated it's not even close.
You should post a video of you doing agar work so we can figure out why 100% of your plates look like shit. Seriously it looks like instead of a SAB you use your toilet bowl.

I'm going to get a few plates going in my wide mouth 1/2 pints. There's no area to put a paper towel on, but I don't think that's an issue. Just the 2 layers of surgical tape should be fine, yeah?
