In the getting started sub the dude who does the PF tek BRF cakes video didn't use a pressure cooker to sterilize his jars before inoculating them. This appealed to me bc being the broke ass college student i am i don't have a ton of money to blow. If i'm extremely cautious is this method of steam sterilization, along with using a still air box for inoculation a pretty decent way of doing it? or will it be like a 50/50 shot at having a uncontaminated cake? Basically is a pressure cooker a necessity? Thanks everyone

With the dry Verm layer as a contamination barrier, you don't even need to inoculate in a SAB...BUT...sterile technique is second to none so if ya got one might as well get comfortable with using it.

If you want to jump to bulk grows you can steam sterilize grain jars in a pot with a well-fitted lid for 8 hours.
Cron Swears by it.
So do I. I've steamed jars when I've had too much extra grain to fit in the PC. It takes time to learn the perfect setting on your stove but you can steam sterilize grains in a pot of simmering water (good fitting lid is a must) for 8 hours if you're hard up for space.
Though if you're living in a dorm in a college you should just find a roommate who has access to an autoclave and give him some weed to let you put jars in his routine sterilizations.
As always, brown-rice-flour/vermiculite/water cakes in wide-mouth-half-pint jars can be steam-sterilized in 2 hours.
If you have an electric burner and a pot with a good lid, the world of mycology is open to you.
