Habitat:
North-facing granite slope, thick moss beds, in a burn area in the west foothills of the White mountains
East-Interior Alaska

I believe I may have found a look alike, I have confidently ID winter chanterelles many times, I never saw these shaggy caps before

Gills:
Species 1- attached, false gills, pinkish-grey/peachy wrinkled in maturity
Species 2- attached, false gills, pinkish-grey/browny wrinkled in maturity

Stem:
1- yellow, uneven, wrinkled, wider in maturity, hollow
2- yellow-brown, nearly red beneath gills, more straight and even, skinny, hollow except for a white, cottony material

Cap:
1-Tan- brown, smooth, indented with a centered hole that penetrates through the entire stem, cap margins inrolled when young

2- shaggy brown fibrils, tan- brown caps indented, no hole,
Margins inrolled when young

Spore print color:
None yet

Bruising:none

I think they are Craterellus tubaeformis.


It would be interesting to check the DNA and see if the undescribed species from California makes it all the way to Alaska.  People are calling it Craterellus neotubaeformis, but it has yet to be validly published.

If you are going to do that, please make a good collection with lots of fruit bodies in various stages of development, and with lots of photos.  Could be the holotype collection for a new species.  PM me for my address.
