Auckland, New Zealand-
A young Kiwi traveller has died after taking part in an ancient Amazon "cleansing ceremony".
Aucklander Matthew Dawson-Clarke, 24, was holidaying in Peru when he joined a seven-day ayahuasca retreat designed to foster a spiritual awakening and bring inner peace.
Ayahuasca, also known as yage, is a plant that contains a hallucinogen, and induces intense psychological effects.
The retreats, which are growing in popularity with tourists and holidaymakers, offer a variety of other "purging" drinks.
They have been linked to serious health problems and at least two other deaths, prompting warnings about the dangers.
Mr Dawson-Clarke's father, Stuart Clarke, said his son had packed a lot into his life.
"Whilst Matt only reached 24 years, he achieved so much in his short life and we remain completely amazed and proud of his achievements.
"Matthew was no different to so many other Kiwis who decide to travel the world in pursuit of their dreams. It is devastating to us that he won't be returning home with all the travel stories like many others have done before him."
The Aucklander had been working for the past 18 months on a luxury yacht based in Europe. The South American trip was a break before he headed back.
"No family should ever have to endure the loss of a child and particularly in such tragic circumstances when they are so far from home," Mr Clarke said.
He did not want to go into the circumstances surrounding his son's death as the family had been focused on bringing the body back to New Zealand.
Mr Dawson-Clarke died on September 3 but his body arrived in the country only yesterday. A coroner is now investigating.
Mr Clarke said his son was in excellent health before heading to the retreat.
"We want people to be aware of the potential dangers so other families do not have to go through what we're going through."
Ayahuasca use, which often involves an experienced shaman, has been documented since the 16th century. It is illegal in many countries but legal in Peru, Brazil and Ecuador. Retreats can cost up to $3000.
The Government's Safe Travel website offers advice relating to the dangers of spiritual cleansing rituals that involve ayahuasca tea.
"While not illegal, ayahuasca tourism is not regulated and consumption of the tea does present certain risks.
"Although deaths from ayahuasca remain uncommon, there have been reports of psychological damage, and assault, theft and rape of people under the influence."

Drug tourism laws, I can see it now. What's funny is that the U.S. will use this as an example to pass a bullshit law that ends up having a global impact. Maybe not, who knows.
But yeah, MAOI's are some serious bizNess mmmmkay. If you're gonna go and participate in a sketchy "ceremony", deep in the jungle surrounded by strangers, make sure you leave your SSRI's at home.

That article totally tries to portray aya as some dangerous unpleasant drug.

Yeah it is one plant and contains one hallucinogen

I feel like they put that in quotes just to make it sound bad, such bad journalism. So many people would benefit from a good purging its insane.

"Man dies after taking Ayahuasca in Peru"
What they won't tell you is that his death happened three weeks after he arrived home, when he got drunk at a Welcome Home party and tripped on the sidewalk and bumped his head, causing a blood clot to break free and plugged the semi-clogged arteries in his heart that were caused by eating too many Happy Meals as a child.
Ronald McDonald killed this kid.
The end.

These shamans often mix more than just the caapi and viridis into their brews. If you go to South America to participate in a ceremony, make sure the center is reputable, and ask the shaman what is in the brew. If (s)he doesn't tell you, then don't take it. Often the shamans include tobacco in the brew, and at least one of the ayahuasca deaths was actually due to nicotine poisoning.

True. Datura aya. Forgot that one. Yeah that's a thing believe it or not. We need to combine the intuition of the shamans with the brains of scientists. A marriage of ceremony and scientific prudence would be glorious.

Agreed man, I love and respect shamans but they definitely did some sketchy stuff.
I feel like a very low datura dose with aya could be interesting, but I bet they made it pretty damn strong...
Thankfully a psychedelic renaissance is happening now

I still don't understand why people go to Amazon to drink it when you could do it at home near a good hospital. And that is just for real aya, people adding datura should be shot. These "shamans" are con men who sprung up to meet a demand. People are so desperate for some spiritual experience. Read the Yage letters by Burroughs he had trek for months thru the jungle to even find a tribe that used it. Now there are retreats everywhere, I fail to see how this is authentic. It's like going to Haiti to watch a Voodoo ceremony, it's not about the religion anymore it's about putting on a show for tourists.

When tobacco is added to any sort of brew, its usually to cause purging.

Answer to this problem:
Legal, fairly regulated ayahuasca ceremony organizations domestically operating with a proper business license to perform these things. The health department regulates the food service industry, why not this one?

There are so many factors to be considered when taking a cocktail of drugs like this... I think that is the thing that is overlooked by 1st world "drug tourists".
The problem isn't shamans or even big-pharma (although some kind of drug interaction is probably responsible for this dudes death); I believe the problem is that people seem to think you can just chuck money at something and buy this kind of experience. Drug Tourism and pseudo spirituality seem to go hand in hand.
Knowledge is everything... In my opinion Ayahuasca, LSD, DMT or whatever is something that is earned through research, by getting out into the world and experiencing people and the culture surrounding it. The fact you can go on a website and order a drug holiday in the rainforest seems to me to be a self-perpetuating problem.
