2015 salvia flowers thread- let's make seeds!!!!!! 2

Ok maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but in the northern hemisphere it's one day away from fall, the day Salvia decides around the time to produce flowers. That's my goal, to produce flowers, hand pollinate and produce seeds.
Sort of what I did last year, but a more serious experiment knowing now what can be accomplished.
Instead of one flower stem, I'm hoping for 5 Instead of 2 seeds, I'm hoping for 50.
Everyone is encouraged to post their salvia flowers, I hope there are growers attempting to produce seed this year!!!!
Up till today, my plants show no signs of flowering really, maybe a lengthening of their meristems, but barely.
Let's do this!!!
A vague pic of my 4 trees, their topped and around 6-7 ft, more soon.

Good luck! How old until they are able to produce seed? I understand that it takes the right conditions and its very hard - but i'm just wondering... 1-2 years old?
Nice picture!

Wow. Great pic. Have you ever tried forcing your plants to 'bush' more than grow upward? Obviously, letting them go up works nicely for you, I was just wondering if you find that they just respond better to not being bushed... I've personally always pursued a bushier plant, but yours look so dang healthy like that.
-------------------- One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' was his response. 'I don't know', Alice answered. 'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

Thanks, as long as they're big enough they'll be able to flower, it's more a question of size than age. Those plants are 5 months old, cuttings I took in April of this year.
If they get +12hrs interrupted darkness, they should flower. :

Hey CRM, Ya I find they grow better and overall bigger, stems, leaves and eventual flowers. If I top them early I get a plant of smaller stature with branches that still want to grow to the ceiling, and if I don't tie those branches up they'll break off. So it's kind of a pain to prune and easier to just have to support the main stem.
I started my cuttings too early this year and they grew too tall. I was forced to top late in the grow season, Originally I hadn't planned on cutting them, but they were touching the ceiling I had no choice. I thought about growing them on their sides by tipping the pot 45 degrees but that seemed unpractical in the long run

Hey when!
You sir, are a salvia growing guru! I've managed to keep my family of sally plants around for years now, but have never had such luscious and happy plants as you have. What is the largest size pots you use? Like, how big are the pots those plants in the pic are in?

thanks man, she likes growing for me for some reason, I guess we understand each other.
The pots are fairly big but not unmanageable, maybe 2 gallon. I'll put a pic up tomorrow.
One other reason a bigger pot is favorable is for use as a counterweight. My plants were getting tall and top heavy, easily tipping over if not weighed down with something, I used rocks before I had to transplant lol

I thought Salvia didn't do seeds as it reproduces vegetatively.

No, it does produce seed. The generally accepted idea is that for the most part, salvia seeds are non-viable. Viable seeds are very hard to come by. Even if you can get sally to flower, the seeds usually aren't usually any good.
There are a couple of folks here on the forums this year that have successfully started some from seed though. It's rare, but it happens- http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21477800/fpart/1/vc/1

actually, it might be more conditions, day length, nutes, temps, than size. i once had a 1 foot cutting try to flower. it didn't quite make it there, but it got really close. i have never been able to replicate it since. it happened right after taking the cutting off an outdoor plant, right before fall like you said. the plant outside wasn't huge though, maybe waist high but pretty bushy.

Your cutting maybe came from a mature plant that was about to flower. Just a thought....Cool though.
I've just reset my mother plant, basically cut it back a few inches above ground level. I also thinned some branches to limit growth from dormant lateral buds. Took several large stem cuttings, which I aim to flower if all goes well. I find they flower in Autumn(Fall) if allowed to get tall enough, like mentioned. About 3 foot is when I find they flower, from past experience. I grow mine outdoors so the shortened day light and cooler conditions initiate flowering without me doing anything.
@When: Do you heat your grow space or does it get cool in their as the season changes? I'm curious if it's just photo period that initiates flowering or a combination. Also, how do you pollinate your flowers?

The space won't be heated until closer to December, so it does get cool enough that the plants would notice the temp change during the season change.
I use this guide to pollinate, it works well. Good luck with your flowers!

i guess i shouldn't have said "right after" making the cutting. no doubt the mother plant was probably going to flower, but the cutting had been sitting in water rooting for at least a couple months. it definitely initiated the flower growth as a cutting long after i cut the top off the mother plant outdoors.
here's the original thread
