Fewer drugs have been washing up on Texas beaches
    #22274889 - 09/22/15 04:11 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

September 21, 2015

Houston, Tx -
What would you do if you found a stash of cocaine or marijuana along the beach? The dilemma is apparently becoming less of a problem, according to police.

Fewer bundles of cocaine and marijuana are washing up on Texas beaches compared to previous years, according to a recently released government drug report.

There were 22 instances of "wash ups" in 2014. That compares to 60 in 2013 and 31 in 2012, according to the report.

The drugs are believed to be lost or abandoned by smugglers as they work along the coastline up from Mexico and seek to get around the Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety which focus primarily on the land border.

The traffickers are known to zip along the coast in fast boats, or come in from mother ships and attempt to quickly unload drug loads and hide them in the dunes until they can later be retrieved.

They are also known to try and disguise themselves as campers or fishermen as they use GPS coordinates to pick up the loads left for them.

Padre Island National Seashore has seen many of the wash ups.

"The rural expanse of the (Padre Island National Seashore) provides an area of solitude and relaxation for park visitors, but it also provides a perfect environment for drug traffickers seeking to conduct their criminal activities in seclusion," notes the report.

The 2015 Threat Assessment was prepared by the Houston High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, a coalition of law enforcement agencies that hugs the Gulf Coast. It further notes that portions of the coast are difficult for law enforcement to regularly monitor. Investigators from a squad known as the Coastal Bend Maritime Interdiction Team said they were unsure what was behind the decline in wash ups.

Officials have previously said that one of the greatest unknowns in the Texas drug fight is exactly what is going on in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and how traffickers are exploiting a coastline that is largely unguarded and unpatrolled compared to the land border.

I've posted in several threads about drugs washing up in Galveston, TX (the gulf of mexico - they say there's the east coast, the best coast, and the south coast, which runs along from mexico through texas, louisiana, mississippi with all its S, alabama, to florida).

In at least one thread I linked to other threads and articles about drugs washing up specifically in Galveston, TX.

I think fewer and fewer people are turning the drugs in to the police, but there are the same amount washing up on the beaches.

Joe Blow Corporate Guy thinks he has something to lose, he turns in the drugs, and doesn't think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars he just threw away "doing the right thing".  Bring in an economic recession, and more and more Corporate Joes are thinking they don't have much to lose, and the money is worth the risk.  Thanks government, and thanks corporations.  Keep that recession crankin.

That's funny because the importation of cocaine has been the highest it's ever been since the 80's. They just don't loose it now because they've gone through trial and errors enough to keep the bundles safe now.

Yeah I would guess it has to do with a change in tactics.  I imagine they switch up methods from year to year and if a high-yield low-risk avenue opens up they well abandon more risky routes like speedboats and remote GPS drops.  Maybe they have a deal going with the authorities, wouldn't be the first time.

That moldy bale looks terrible. I thought commercial Mexican bud has been improving over the last few years. The shitty Mexican stuff we get here in Ohio is a lot better than that, but maybe it's because hardly anyone smokes it anymore and they're giving us the better stuff to get sales back.

It was probably swashing around for a while. IDK, if I were a smuggler, I'd send super shitty weed that I don't want(or couldn't sell) where they expect it while i send the good stuff through a better and safer channel.

Mexicans are now Importing weed from the usa instead of the other way around. Mexico is only hurting itself by keeping it illegal. Weed being illegal is an american idea, that the rest of the world has copied. It was very foolish to copy off us, because look at what has happened. Countless needless deaths.

Well to be fair it has turned into an industry in itself.  I imagine they're not concerned about the ethics of legalization as much as getting cut off from that sweet sweet prohibition enforcement funding they get from the US.  The bigger their drug trafficking gets, the more money comes in.  Honestly drugs alone can't compete with selling drugs and selling security for and from drug traffickers.

I wonder what would happen to all this if drugs were suddenly legalized.  Would these criminals become legit or would they just move to other forms of crime?

It was swimming in the ocean for who knows how long; a fisherman pulled it up.
