Outdoor King Oyster Fruits!
    #22274612 - 09/22/15 03:17 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Went outside and saw that a King Oyster saw dust block I buried a month or so ago has started to fruit! I hadn't been able to fruit it inside because my A/C had been broken and temps were around 80* in my GH. Now that the temps are getting down to the mid 50's at night, they have begun to grow outdoors. Hopefully the mites leave them alone, they look to be "bug free" for now...

I obtained the culture by cloning a store bought mushroom. I've never seen mycelium run as fast as this strain. A single agar wedge could finish a quart of WBS within 5 days.

Here are some pics that I will be updating as they mature.

24hr update. Not too much growth here, but I feel like the next day or two will really bring a lot. I've been watering at night around 11pm and in the day at about 11am.

More updates to come...

Here is what they are looking like this morning. I'm thinking they are ready to go. I'll have to wait till tonight to pick them after I get off work.

These have stayed nice and squat. Little stubby bastards. They also have taken a minimal amount of damage from animals.

I cant wait to try them out!

Well for one, he didn't even know I was living there lol. I have been paying my buddy who has been in turn paying the owner of the house. I guess he wasn't trying to have the rent raised. The other issues I'd rather not openly discuss.

But Juiceh, would you recommend deep frying those jaunts?

Well I used to work for the guy so its all good, he's just raising the rent, but some serious changes had to be made. I'll be moving out soon anyways. I've got my eyes on the west coast...

So I harvested them and they all were infested with little white maggots or worms or some shit. Some of the stems were real bad and mushy. A couple of them werent so bad and ive come too far to throw them all out so i ended up slicing off the caps (which were the least contaminated) and simply fried them in butter. The cooking killed whatever maggots were present and they were tasty none the less. I feel like the feces and bacteria added that extra complexity that store bought king oysters were lacking haha.

Oh well, they were still fun to watch grow. I'll have to use that recipe on some store bought kings, thanks for posting that link juice. I'll throw up some pics of the harvest and infestation tomorrow when I get to a computer.

Yup. Fungus gnat larva. Happens to allot of my outdoor oysters. That and slugs. I usually eat them also, if they aren't horribly bad. Insects don't seem to bother my outdoor lions mane too much though.

A good method is to soak your mush in salt water for a bit to run out the bugs and maggots. Change the water out a couple of times with fresh salt water to get em all. You can do the last couple soaks in salt-free water if necessary to leech out any excess salt that the mushrooms may have absorbed.

Yeah, but that makes them mushy. I just call the worms a "protein supplement ".

I disagee. Worms eatting the insides out makes them mushy.

I'm pretty sure that it's general knowledge that soaking any mushroom in water will make it soft.

But you are also correct when you say the worms make them soft. I've had plenty of experience with those darn worms!
