the Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesizer and Texas Instruments SN76489A PSG for Sega Genesis?
the 8-bit Sony SPC700 for Super Nintendo?
or Paula sound from the Amiga?
discuss, post music, enjoy.

The SNES always seemed to have the best sound quality and music of those systems, but I don't know shit about how the actual chips worked.

just based on the sound, and the games, which one is your favorite system's sound though?
personally, my favorite is Genesis. i love it's very mechanical sound, and alot of Sega games for the Gen just sound awesome and technically proficient. less fluffy sounding than most SNES games.

A good few of the SNES RPGs, particularly FF 4-6 and Secret of Mana had great music. DKC also had pretty incredible music. If you listen to them side by side and ignore the games, SNES shits on the other two, but in terms of how well it fit the purpose, I guess SNES and Megadrive were about equal.

yeah, maybe you've got a point there, i mean, Genesis music MOSTLY all sounds similar, save maybe Sonic music can separate from the rest...and SNES had more unique tracks; plus it was the king of RPG's and RPG's had some of the sweetest tunes...and like you said, DKC (Rare)....
but then again, in terms of WHAT they sound like (as oppose to the tracks themselves) i still like Genesis more for it's gritty quality. SNES sample's are softer and more airy, while Genesis is more grinding and mechanical sounding, more hard.
PS: Mega Man X music was also the shit.

i had a thought about game music.
why is it that game devs treat 'good music' in games as some sort of gimmick now? and why is it that i only see 'good music' only in that sense, for the most part? i mean to be fair RPG's from Japan, and plenty of games that feel into Indie developer hands, for the most part, still focus a good deal on the music...but this has become a trend, when this used to be mandatory.

Because nowadays the majority of casual gamers are only interested in realistic graphics. Sad but true. At least Nintendo still thinks music is crucial to all their games. They always deliver a top notch soundtrack.
IMHO the Zelda series has always had the best soundtrack no matter which title. Here an 8-Bit remake of the OoT soundtrack. Enjoy!
