PC safety valve melted without any pressure?

I literally just installed a new safety valve, set some grains to cook (initially let them heat up on high heat, then when it began to boil/simmer, 3/4ths of top heat, of the smallest hob - considering it's the smallest hob I didn't think it would get that hot...), as usual let some steam escape for a couple of minute before sticking the weight on, and as soon as I did steam started pouring through the valve!
Before I waste another £5 on a safety valve could you guys explain what I did wrong? Simply too high a temperature?

Should I just throw these jars out then? They were only in for about 10 minutes

No you'll be fine to still PC them as long as you can do it soon. What kind of pressure cooker are you using?

I am not familiar with the safety valve on the pc. If something actually melted, I would assume that there was no water in the pc which allowed the metal to get hotter than 212f

The safety valve is a small steel valve that lets out air when the steel alloy layer melts.
There's still at least 2 inches of water in there. The only other explanation I can think of is the valve being shoddy and just not made very well.

Melted steel? Shoddy at best.

Well, its purpose is to melt when temperature/pressure gets too high to release pressure. Thing is, there was never any pressure because I'd yet to put the weight on!

I have that PC, so does a friend, neither had a safety plug like you describe, one where metal would melt. Can you link to the safety valve you bought for it?
Maybe it is simply the incorrect one and is never going to seal. The original one that came with mine did let lots of steam out initially, its supposed to. When the steam gets to a certain level it lifts it up and it seals and remains sealed. Sometimes it would not lift well and I would lift it myself with a fork or spoon and it would then seal off.
My friend lost his and I gave him mine and stuck a pressure gauge in mine. The PC has a slot in the side of the lid where the gasket can bulge out if its over pressured.
That PC can be ran at fairly high psi, a good choice for UK guys. Most in argos only go to 10 or 12psi.

Hmm, it looks identical to the old safety valve which also melted. They're both see-through now because the alloy melted. By both I mean the one it came with as well.
With what you're describing, it is exactly the same as the one I have though. I've also had to poke the safety valve with a fork to get it to lift. On your safety valve, is there a hole all the way through, or is it flat and solid? If it's solid, that's the alloy metal which melts under high temperature/pressure, when it melts you can see right through the hole from one side to the other to rapidly let steam out if needed.

The seller removed the valve I bought, but this one is still here and is identical to what I have.
I'm very confused. I guess all I can do is try again.

Either the valve was bad our it got too hot. I have no idea how it would have gotten to hot of there was water inside of it. Time for an all American sterilizer

+1, I would have thought the gasket should be rightly fucked if the lid managed to get that hot.

AA pcs cannot be sold in the EU as they do not conform to some EU regulations. You can get some from some suppliers but they cost a fortune, or they come up the odd time on secondhand selling sites.
