Rock/Heavy Metal and good rap. I'll usually switch between those genre's every couple months. Been on a metal binge recently though.

I like electronic, especially ambient or atmospheric stuff and like it  incorporated in other genres too.

Lately it's been Indie Folk and Chill Electronic/Chillwave music. I happen to listen to a lot of roots music like Bluegrass as well.

Music that deals with controversial topics like death, anxiety, depression, addiction, alienation, wisdom even. Music that sees beauty in the dissonance, with good lyrics and soundscape atmospheres that fit the lyrics. Genre is irrelevant - if it's good art. I would put Tool, Death Cab For Cutie and Radiohead next to each other simply because they all achieve a high standard of poetry/art, IMHO.

Then you get stuff like The Smashing Pumpkins that I listen to when I feel anxy, or The White Stripes' Hardest Button to Button that deals with alienation.

TL/DR
Heavy Blues, Alternative and emotional/realistic Art Rock.

Blue October has cool lyrics, what I'm looking for is art that makes you feel differently about the theme of the song after you've listened to it, a story where there's a point where the whole song comes together.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one
the lyrics lead you into what is one of the saddest songs to me. Powerful message.

This song reminds me of my girlfriend, the pure unconditional love we share. Nothing too special lyric-wise, but beautiful.

With my feet on the dash, the world doesn't matter...

I don't feel Blue October's sound compliments the lyrics, I'd say it is indeed a pop band.

If you are gonna sing about something dark and self loafing, use a darker tone, slower tempo, maybe more intimate, like radioheads creep where they illustrate the minimalism visually in the music vid.

Basically I mean this version might be better for some

Nothing like punk rock back in it's heyday.
I'm talking about when Black Flag was getting big, and SST was signing stupid good bands left and right.
Minutemen- "Double Nickels on the Dime" is a good start if you're interested
