PNW hunter that now lives In Virginia area....
    #22267677 - 09/20/15 11:54 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Man was I spoiled and didnt even know it. There were so many options to hunt back in Oregon. I have p. azurescen, baeocystis, and of course the abundant cyanescens under my belt form PNW area. After relocating of course its a whole new ball game... From what i gather my best hope in Southeast VA is of course the woodlovers... From the limited sources i can find it seems I missed p. ovoideocystidiata but Is still possible here shortly for some fall fruiting. If im not mistakin Also my best bet is P. caerulipes. From what I understand I could find early or late bloomers even now but needless to say Any input from anyone in this area or knowledge would be great. I am familiar with the actives list of this area but just really looking for friendly advice on my best bet. Im thinking these two are possible until first frost. If you can be so kind and let me know your opinion. Of course feel free to browse my album of some beautiful finds back in PNW. What a challenge out here... Ill find some Im sure... Of what... Guess thats natures call. feedback appreciated. Southeast virginia about 60 miles from the east coast and 60 miles from north Carolina... Heavily wooded area .... Thanks Hopefully Ill find some east coast hunters on here... Thanks for reading ...

I would also check horse pastures for Panaeolus subbalteatus during the spring/summer, and read up on Gymnopilus sp. which you can find summer/fall.

welcome to VA.

people find fall ovoids every autumn but the fall fruiting of the east coast ovoid is much, much lighter than the spring fruiting (data from the previous ovoid threads).

as far as caerulipes, you'd have to run out to the foothills if i'm not mistaken; they seemingly need elevation.  maybe their specific  habitat only occurs in hilly areas...I can't think of many forests down in the lowlands that are dominated by mixed groves of beech and birch.

about 25 years ago i knew of at least one field in the Pungo area that sometimes produced cubes, but i stopped going there many years ago.  your best bets are probably going to be P. cinctulus if there are any horse farms near you and the active Gymnopilus species, IMHO.

Great... Thanks for the feedback.... Ill surely check out the active Gymnopilus and get familiar with them... I do know of at least a spot Iv'e seen Chantrelles about an hour from here in the blueridge mountains so at least i know where to find some good edibles. I have noticed quite a bit of fruiting of many species just in the woods around here.... There is a nice grade running down to a creek with so many downed trees and fungus everywhere right out the door. Im determined however to find that short window coming up for a last chance at ovoids. So at least Im not too late this year. Amanita Muscaria are everywhere around my place as I recall seeing last year though I cant recall exactly what month it was... dont really care for the Amanitas but beautiful none the less. One can never know I suppose... we had some rain and the temps seem pretty good for fruiting today so Im gonna take a hike and get familiar. I enjoy the hunt none the less... One can never know lol... Seek and you will find as they say...Fun and something to do anyway. Ill post some habitat pics of my initial area a bit later.... Saw some fruiting overnight so might as well see whats out there...

have fun and let us know what you find.

oh, and condolences on moving to VA from the PNW.  there are many things i like about the commonwealth, but the amount of active fungi ain't one of them.
