Growing in a plastic lined cardboard box? Can it be done?

Of course it can be done. I do it all the time. No fans, no holes, no polyfill. Just a spay bottle and some tape.
Cost a lot less than using tubs. Potentially more discreet. You should give it a shot.

Get a box, spawn, trash bag, coir, tape. Put ba bag in box. Pasteurize the coir, drain off excess water, mix coir and spawn. Place mixture inside bag. Cover with casing. Close box up for a few days. Open box up, start misting daily. Wait for mushrooms

That was just as helpful as a mechanic explaining a flat tire.

Don't forget to fan it daily as well though! Gonna need to give it fresh air exchange yourself with this method. Isn't this the point of a monotub though? You're not saving much money, and to me the few bucks is worth not having to fan and mist all the time. But to each their own i guess.

I'd imagine since it is pretty much open air fruiting, that you'd need to fan it. Since air is almost never truly stagnate.

I like my tubs. But no reason this couldn't work. In a pinch if ya need to spawn something and have no free tubs it could save ya a hard decision

I don't think that I have actually fanned it. I think I have blown in it a few times.
