If you be doin' it, where are the best spots??
--------------------
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

I don't think anywhere on the east coast holds up against some of the spots out west, but Long Island actually has some pretty good surf. Quicksilver tournament was held at Long Beach, NY, but that was before the hurricane that wrecked everything. I personally think the hurricane fucked up the sandbars and it hasn't been as good since. IME it's best during the coldest months, so as long as your willing to throw on a 4/5, its a good time. NJ also has some solid spots.

I don't surf, but NJ and the mid-atlantic in general has a ton of wrecks to dive and it's what keeps a lot of divers in the tri-state area sane. Lots of history in the area, and the wrecks serve as artificial reefs that attract marine life. Not a destination spot for divers from outside of the northeast, really, and visibility can be rough, but if you can dive there, you'll be able to do any kind of recreational open water diving - and if you like wreck diving, it's cool. Same with the Carolinas.
I imagine surfing in the NE is kind of the same, not really a destination spot like others around the world, but there's still some solid spots and a community, nonetheless. I imagine it's similar in the PNW.

Word thats actually good to know, I'm going for my advanced certification now. Next time I'm up there I'll be sure to check out some of the wrecks. I got into diving about a year ago and love it. It's probably one of the most relaxing and intriguing activities I've taken up. I wish I knew more people that were into it, but all my friends seem afraid for some reason

congratulations! My deep dive for that one was a great wreck, so maybe you'll get a nice preview depending on where you are. Wreck diving is my favorite honestly, I was introduced WAY too young in water too deep for a junior open water diver(maxed at 65-70ft, so nothing too crazy but it would be frowned upon), but it was a tiny dive shack in Mexico and they still took good care of me. I'd like to venture into technical diving and one day in the far future possibly cave diving if I could handle it, but I've got to complete an enriched air course and a deep diver course before I can do anything beyond a very redundant seeming intro to the idea of technical diving course.
NJ has tons of shore diving, and as much as I love offshore dives and even found a really reasonably priced hands-off dive shop that'd haul your ass out for 30 bucks a dive if you just used their air tanks, it was a big operation compared to most of the other ones I've used, and the bigger the boats/more people the cheaper it seems to be unless you want a divemaster in the water with you.

have fun with the certification!
and I know what you mean by relaxing, in good conditions diving is so zen and dream like to me. Snorkeling relaxes me too and I have lots of fun diving as far down as I can, but when you dive it feels like you're more apart of the environment and exploring it feels easier.
