Pholiota squarrosoides
    #22266020 - 09/20/15 05:23 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice concerning the edibility of Pholiota squarrosoides. There are conflicting accounts of its edibility, and I'd like to hear what you think. I found some today, and I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. Now, I'm thinking about trying to grow them.

Regards,

Rick

I think the variety that's cultivated is adiposa.  Looks very similar.  From what I've read the squarrosa are supposed to be bad with alcohol especially.  Maybe try eating one and see if you get sick?

Yeah, squarrosa isn't the same shroom. Consensus is pretty good that you shouldn't eat squarrosa. But, Pholiota squarrosoides is a different critter. Reviews are mixed.

I already cooked one up and ate it. It was pretty tasty. Slightly better than an oyster mushroom--and they look really cool. Just not sure I want to eat any more if they might be toxic.
