It's gettin to be about that time of year again!
    #22265487 - 09/20/15 03:23 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

That time of year to plant seeds in preparation for the cold months:rolleyes:

Anyways I've got a bunch of different cacti seeds to work with this year most of which are non active "yet beautiful" species. A lot of the seeds I have I won't really be able to do a lot with because I'm preparing to grow a lot of very particular types that I've had my eye on for awhile so I'll probably have to drop some cash in the next couple of weeks to get some of what I need this season.

Anyways here's the prep and I'll inform you all what seeds I'm growing when the time comes and I know for sure.

Wish me luck and keep your eyes peeled for updates:super:

I am still in harvest mode, myself. I have been collecting seed from neighborhood clerodendrum trees, and berries from Lilly of the valley. . and seeds from people's Cosmos and zinnia plants that they have planted on parking strips, when I walk my dog.

I have saved seed from the cristae-mutation feverfew and others.

I echo your excitement for the season, Spaceman. I want to get a planter box and or coldframe or 2, for the front of my chimney.. and maybe grow some Kales and lettuces for cold months.

Can't wait to see what the fall has in store for you, spacey!
This is probably the first fall/winter season I have EVER looked forward to in my life, because I am trying to expand my growing/gardening into those months with some cool weather crops... Do you have a fall/winter veggie garden planned this year???

I just wanted everyone to know I just found the time to plant a few varieties of cacti. I'll keep you all informed with how things go and possibly turn this thread into something like a grow and preparation log.

I really need to sit down and get a list of the stuff I am working with. I just collected some Lilly of the valley seed, and some Clerodendrum tree seeds. I need to be thinking of some cold weather crops. I have the coldframe now, so I might try growing some kales and lettuces.. maybe some Swiss Chards. I will have to check my seed-bank.

Ok Guys I just wanted to post a lil update on the seeds I planted.

I've checked on them today and I've noticed some very quick and great germination for my Ariocarpus and Turbincarpus but my Strombocactus disciformis seem to be in limbo atm. I have MANY more seeds as well that I have yet to plant but I'm planning to get on top of that a lil later today if I can catch some time to do so. Sooo much to do and so little time in a single human life:nonono:

I don't have any pics yet because they are sooo small but be expecting picture updates here soon as well as some Awesome new grafts:grin:

Strombocactus seedlings are tiny bright green grains of sand. They may well have germinated and you missed them. Let's see those pictures.

Ok guys I snapped a few pics yesterday of the Turbinicarpus, Ariocarpus etc. seedlings that have sprouted.

I also counted most of the seeds I planted so that I can have a personal idea of germination rates and all.

This container may be hard to see the seedlings through but I taped it shut all the way around because I wasn't happy with it's natural seal. Later on when the seedlings grow a lil larger I'll take the tape off so we can get a better look at them. ATM though I'm seeing ALOT of growth already after just about a week and a half;)

This one should be easier to see and they were planted on the same day as the ones above.

I didn't take a pic of this ones labels but in each corner there is either Lophophora fricii, Lophophora koehresii, Lophophora jourdaniana and the last corner is Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus and it seems to have 3 germinated seeds atm "that I'm very proud of:grin:".

Figured posting these others here would fit due to the subject but my Mammillaria nejapensis seems to be flowering. I'm sure it won't work but I was hoping to try to pollinate 1 flower with another on the same plant.

Sida cordifolia in flower. I took better pics today that I'll post up a lil later.

My lil Lithop in flower. I also took another pic of this today that I'll post up later too where you can start to see the flower opening:grin:

Since there seems to be a lot of flowers in this thread already maybe these would fit in well here too;)

Magic Lilies are sooo beautiful IMHO:naughty:

Never heard those called magic lilies before. I've always called them 'spider lilies'. They are showing up all over the place this time of year for sure. Nice pics!

I got some seedlings going right now, myself. I have a few tray of Gymnos. I LOVE Gymnocalyciums. They are Easy to care for, don't get too big. they germinate in abundance and readily. (In a set of 25 seed. . I usually get about 20 or so). .so pretty good. I just sent away to England, for some Epiphyllum varieties, (special colors), and some Plumeria and Adenium seed. I know we all have some varieties of plants that we enjoy growing. I suppose for me, beyond trichos and lophos, and ethnogens.. its Gymnos.

Thanks for the update, spacey. . always enjoy seeing your stuff.

It is getting that time of year for one of the most beautiful flower displays of all - when the slow-growing and late-flowering genus, Ariocarpus, burst into bloom.

A double-headed Ariocarpus bravoanus in flower today.

And one of her offspring, about 3 years old now, budding for the first time - now officially an adult!!

Most mams are self fertile in my experience.  Yours should set seed without any extra effort on your part if it's anything like the ones in my collection.  Pretty soon you'll be drowning in seedlings.

I think that is an absolutely beautiful fissuratus buddy:super:

When it comes to my threads I don't mind if any of you guys wanna post your stuff it's always welcomed especially if it adds good info to the thread:wink:

But when it comes to other peoples threads Spanishfly you might wanna ask before posting your pics like in Zeds cacti photos thread.

I really wish you would start your own thread where you can post all the pics of all the plants you have so we can all see them in 1 area.

I know you have some really good ones and honestly I would like to be able to see them all so I can possibly work out a trade with you.

Are you collecting the seeds from your fissuratus?

Thanks for the kind words, Spaceman.

And I DO have my own thread - shame no other bastard ever visits it !!!!!  There is one idiot who keeps complaining I haven´t posted pics of my seed growing - but never goes there.

And no - I will not be collecting any seeds from the A. fissuratus - it is the only one I have of that species and the seeds, if any, will be hybrid.
