What's the point of philosophy?

Can somebody explain philosophy to me? What the hell is it for?
I've had philosophy classes at university. It was the class nobody bothered to show up for. I listened, I read the books, I read the notes and yet, it only felt like a total waste of my time. Mental masturbation without the orgasm...
I never got it.
Can somebody enlighten me? Surely I'm missing something here.

Philosophy is the questioning of the social norms. It's the search for purpose, and the question why?

That is so incredibly vague. Kinda like what a philosopher would say

It's because philosophy is a pretty wide field. Everyone has their own personal philosophies. It's pretty much to discuss things we don't quite understand.

First, we must ask ourselves what philosophy is. What is philosophy? Baby, don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. No more.

I almost took philosophy in college. My professor was a fat bastard who only liked you if you had the same ideas as him. Isn't that against everything that philosophy is supposed to teach? I dropped that class faster than Britney Spears' baby.

Philosophy can be applied to so many different things, it's just the application of logical thought. Mainly I think the most important aspect of philosophy is ethics

Philosophy is just questioning reality. It's a creative force that drives science and inspires artists. It only lacks the orgasm if you do nothing with it.

Propensity is missing the brain to understand the importance of saying anything remarkable about anything ever instead of aimlessly talking trash to everyone

the above quote is true because, the more you understand yourself and the universe around you, the more you mature. and when you reach maximum maturity, you die.

This is why philsophy comes off as useless. PAtlal, I felt a lot like you and generally agree when it comes to this topic
I feel that philosophy does little but waste time and energy. If you are looking for spiritual truth and clarity in life, look into Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. If you are looking for social and political phislophy, look to the west. And if you are just tryna have fun, discussing philsophy is also fun
The objective and empircal aspects of hinduism and buddhism have changed my life. The political, social and economic philsophies of the west changed the way we organize society
tldr; if you are looking for spiritual truth look into faiths of the east. they are actually helpful and logical imo

My roommate, out of ignorance, said the point of philosophy was to make others argument invalid all the while not really bringing anything to the table.
This kid is just asking for it though in my opinion. Or he's just a complete sociopath. I choose to believe the latter though out of default because the former consists of me going to prison.
--------------------
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

The point of philosophy is to bring understanding to the mind that there is no point.

Science emerged from philosophy. While we're alive, it seems to me determining the best way to spend that time is a meaningful pursuit. Beyond that, nothing has meaning anyway
