Pleurotus Sp. Grow Log
    #22264411 - 09/20/15 11:39 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

This grow is me having fun growing different oyster species.
Nothing too serious but I plan on growing various species on a couple of different substrates.

So far, I've decided that I will do King Oyster and Blue Oyster. Applewood pellets (supplemented and not supplemented) and mulch will be the substrates of choice. I plan on using straw in the near future. I also will add more pleurotus to the grow log in the near future.

Dates are for my reference.

Spawned some Blue Oysters to applewood fuel pellets on 9/19

Also have a few jars with oats/sawdust that will be ready to fruit soon. I'll keep this updated.

Hey man how do you prepare your fuel pellet jars? It's my first time growing oysters, I have pink and chocolate. Do you do the same tek for shitakes and portabellas?

works for shiitakes. portobellas need compost, not sawdust

My fault. That tek is for the bags. I just tried to do 50/50 sawdust/oats. I could have supplemented since I sterilized the jars but I didn't.

What you want to do is hydrate your pellets and grain and then PC the jars as if you were making normal spawn.

Muda's bottle tek gets the concept across pretty well.

You really want the lid of your jar to have a hole with a filter in it. There are many different types of filters.

Examples of filter materials: Polyfill, EZ Felt, Synthetic Filter Discs & more

Put two jars of oysters on sawdust/oats in fruiting conditions on the deck on 9/21/15

The bags are recovering nicely. I forgot to take a picture though. I'll have pics of the bags tomorrow.

Those bags are bouncing back.

Put another sawdust/oat jar into fruiting today (9/22/2015) didn't snap a pic. It looks the same as the ones I already put into fruiting. I put them under a large spider web with a big spider in it.

I get mine from Out-Grow. I get the extra large, because I mix my spawn right in the bag, so I like the extra room.

Aww man guys. It looks like all of the blue oyster containers that I put outside are starting to show signs of some sort of contaminant. Maybe it went by undetected in my spawn, or it could have been a result of my poorly designed lids

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. I have several bags outside that have produced really good flushes. One lion's mane bag is almost half contamination and has produced 24 oz of fruit so far and is putting on more as we speak. Let it go and see what happens.

I just spawned some blues to sawdust and one to straw. I can't believe how aggressive it is. On one of the sawdust bags I had 2 small spots of green and thought it was done for. Next day the mycelium had overtaken it!

Do you smell your spawn before using it? It's a good check before using each jar. How do the questionable bags of blues smell? Usually you can smell bacteria or yeast. Oysters should smell like fresh almost sweet mushroom growth with some underlying substrate smell. When in doubt throw it out... but outside not in the trash. 90% of the time mother nature sorts things out and gives you fruits outdoors.

Yeah I sniff test.
They all smelled like clean blue O. spawn.
Which you described just as I would. A sweet mushroom smell.

The bags smell the same way too. I was gonna put them on my deck. I don't even have my martha setup yet. I don't know where to put it. Not much space.

Should I go ahead and cut Xs and stick those first two bags outside?

Very cool bags brother. I think it's unanimous, oysters tend to fruit better outdoors

A better look at those pins:

No pins from this one yet. It looks fucked to me. I'll let them keep going just for the hell of it.

There were side pins on this one so I went ahead and took it out of the container... Is this a bad idea?
My only fear is that it would dry out since it is not in a container.

Also here are those bags I stuck outside. It won't be long before I can let my kings go outside too.

Jars don't fruit as nicely as blocks?:woah:
Joking, sweet grow brother, I do all my oysters in 5 gallon buckets with 5-10 holes, makes for giant clusters of beautiful fruits. They fruit nicely outside in my shack
