Sterilizing Problems
    #2223628 - 01/06/04 03:47 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I am using just glasses with no tops, im goin to use aluminum foil as mentioned in the PF tek for simple minds guide.

The glasses are fine, have a bigger top then bottom so on, but i dont have a pressure cooker...what do all of you guys use to sterilize your jars without pressure cookers?

And also, after the substrate is in do i have to sterilize the jar again?

hi

you can use a steam canner... or any big stovetop pot that will hold your jars. try to get a very tight fitting lid -- i used to wrap tin foil around the edge of the pan to make the lid fit better -- be carefull not to create anything that is air tight -- it could blow the lid off or worse.

dont sterilize your jars before loading. they will be sterilized while the substrate is in them.

load the jars, slap on soem tin foil and tape or rubberbands, etc -- and sterilize.

peace

ok...now i should put water in the stovetop pot right?
and also, i got my setup so that i have a plastic garbage can thats big enough for one cake...i plan on puttin saran wrap (or however you spell it) over the top, that'll work right, im gonna have perlite at the bottom with a moist paper towel with the cake on top...i just want all this to work,

and most importantly, how long should i keep them on the stove top and to what degree, my stove has HIGH then 8-2 then LOW

ur setup should work fine, just make sure to fan them once in awhile. hard to say a temp. put a cloth in the bottom of your pot, so the jars dont touch the metal directly. put enough water in so they arent floating but have maybe 2 inches of h20 around em, and turn the heat up. when it starts boiling knock the temp down. You want steam without cooking them, also you may need to add more water as it goes. Id recommend doing this for about an hour. Good luck!

I have always wonderd way it would be bad to cook the substrate wouldnt it just make the jar colonize faster?

i duno why but it doensnt seem to happen. i think maybe it drys it out too much ya kno? so they dont have any water to grow. but maybe if you cooked it, added h20 and sterilized again without cooking this time? someone should try it

ok, you put water in the pot, place your glass with all the substrate, covered with foil into the pot of water. The water should be about half up on the glass. Boil it as high as you can, with a lid on the pot, for about 30 minutes. Let the pot and the water cool down, then take the glass out.

Definitely longer than 30 minutes.
More towards 90.

Yes, many people have both tried and succeeded at it. This is nothing new.
