poop particles from the air get into the water resulting in a poopy and stale taste.

I know what you mean. I hypothesize that this has to do with the amount of dust in the air. I used to do this all the time at my last apartment. We didn't have too much of a dust issue; it was a somewhat humid place near a lake. I could leave water out for days before it tasted off. However, my new place is in a much dryer area. If I leave a glass out, it tastes stale by the next morning. I hate it.

Dissolved oxygen diffuses out of the water, this is the primary cause why water starts to taste 'stale'.

I notice if I leave good water sealed in a plastic container it tastes weird after 2 days
Perhaps that's the plastic leaching into the water

I think you'd be surprised at how much chlorine, floride, ect some citys put into their water compared to others.
Here, we have signs telling people the water will kill plants because there is so much in it
so my guess is there's some kind of chemical reaction when it comes in contain with the air, it oxidizes the chem's which makes it taste like shit
I used to get ear aches after showers till I got a chlorine filtered shower head.
sadly the government really really really wants everyone to get floride for some reason, there used to be a filter on the market that would filter that shit out, then less than a year it got updated and now it doesn't filter it out anymore

was it covered up?
if not, my guess is that its probably dust from the air settling in the water giving it a taste

isnt that just evaporation? i'm just guessing, but wouldnt the hydrogen also leave the water if oxygen is ?
which would just be less water, not different water

I don't even like drinking water that's sat out for a few hours
anyone ever look at day+ old water under a microscope? it doesn't take long before things start moving around in there

I know in places I've lived where the chlorine content was really high, it actually started tasting better after sitting for a while as some of the chlorine had been given a chance to evaporate to a certain degree. My understanding is that if you have sensitive plants, you can let the watering can sit in the sun for a while to speed up the process.

Plastic definitely can leach into water, they have done studies of various bottled water brands by leaving them in say a hot car for x hours and testing the plastic levels in the water. I forget the exact results but there was definitely plastic in most of the water, especially certain mineral waters or water where the ph is not very neutral. Pretty sure heat is not even necessary either, just speeds it up. The type of plastic also makes a big difference.

Are you suggesting the oxygen comes from the waters chemical bonds breaking down?

I'd say it's from the chlorine evaporating. People do it all the time purposely when they water plants with it, and chlorine definitely has a taste.

chlorine is unstable, and breaks down overnight. any smell you get from chlorine is from the chloramines, not the actual chlorine itself on a side note.

more of an assumption than a suggestion i didn't know there was extra oxygen in water other than the h2o itself
