air sterilisation
    #2225826 - 01/07/04 01:39 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everybody,

does anyone think that this could be used to sterilise the air in a small glovebox? It's designed to kill bacteria and the like, but I have no idea so any feedback gratefully received. Failing that, how about a hepa unit like this inside a larger glovebox? Any help would be great.

Cheers guys,

-Odium

First off Ionizers don't kill germs, they "ionize" them, at which point they drop like rocks out of the sky. Not ideal for the interior of a glovebox, but the larger ones rock for doing the entire room, you do your process in.

As far as that HEPA filter box you linked to; If you could find a decent way to properly attach it, then it should do the job. It's not the best one I ever saw, but it'll work.

What about just a still air glovebox?

I'd just go out and buy a four dollar can of lysol disinfectant. Actually I did do that and I have 0 contams.

i think it would rock for the inside of a still air glove box. And yes -- it will pretty much sterilize the air.(in my non technical opinion) It will drop particles i believe it was down to the 6 millionth -- whereas hepa filters particles down to what 3-5 tenths? so -- if your working above the floor of the box -- you should be dandy.

I also have a tiny unit similar to that and am going to incorporate it into a box as well.

Cheers plura, that's great news. Basically, i live in the U.k and hepa equipment is ridiculously expensive and rare. Also, the U.k brand of disinfectant I use really screws up cyan spores. I don't know if you've seen pics of lysol mutated shrooms, but this stuff is much more mutagenic.

cheers guys,

You know -- making a 2% peracetic acid solution, and spraying it into the chamber works wonders. That's what we use at work for sterilizing the insides of plastic bubbles at work -- the 2% solution breaks down completely in one hour, so you're left with a sterile environment that can't hurt your mycelium. I did this same thing with my PDY jars -- to get rid of the vacuum (I sealed them too soon) I needed a sterile environment so I made a plastic bubble, put the closed jars inside, sprayed a bunch of 2%PAA inside until my eyes and throat hurt and then sealed it, let it sit for three hours and then cracked open the jars so they'd pull the sterile air in. When I opened the bubble I took a big whiff inside -- it smelled like vinegar (the breakdown product) but no PAA in the air. Needless to say, all the jars grew fine, and there was NO contamination in the PDY, at all.

Peracetic acid, I know, is used a lot in the food processing industry and used to be sold at some online brewing stores. I don't think it's controlled, or anything, but I could be wrong.

Vacuum HEPA filter: $12
PC fan: $2
wire: $1 (or around the house scroungage)

HEPA filtered air: priceless

(sorry for the boring format, I just couldn't resist.)

Do a forum search on gloveboxes and check out the simple designs presented. You can cut a hole and place a HEPA filter behind a PC fan and viola, $15 active HEPA filter! Go ghetto man; or lo-tech whatever. It's just as good but doesn't come in a fancy plastic shell. I spent $30 on one of those HEPA units for the bathroom/glove box tek (in which I had to remove EVERYTHING and disinfect the entire bathroom, run the filter for an hour, wear fresh laundered clothes and gloves and a face mask and.... to infinity). I'm building a glovebox now and that $30 unit is going to be useless except to clean the cig smoke out the bedroom when me girlfriend comes over.
