Dark black stems and perlite

around the cakes growing mushrooms (on the stems and surrounding pearlite), there is some dark brown/black stuff. It doesn't look like mold, but not sure what it is. Could this be spores dropped by the fully grown mushrooms? It isn't around any of the small mushrooms that haven't fully opened yet.
None of this appeared until the shrooms had actually opened up.

It's spores.
-------------------- Alright then, picture this if you will: 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51. Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping... Holy fucking shit!

Thanks so much for the quick response....my first grow and was kinda freaking out. Threw out some of the cakes/areas that looked like that but pulled what i had from them so at least I had a little something....got paranoid after reading all the contamination stuff.

Alright! I was worried about the black spots on my pearlite. Spores... I should have guessed!

I had the same thing happen on my first grow/flush recently. One of the mushys turned black and then it seemed to start infecting the ones around it, I let 2 days pass without doing much but when I noticed it was spreading I opted to remove the dark tissue that was forming on a piece of the cake. The rest of it seems to be growing just fine though, so I hope I can get a few flushes out of it. If not I already cloned some nice specimens haha Has anyone had a similar contam like this? If someone with experience could shed advice on the best way to go about it I'd appreciate it. btw, I hope I'm not highjacking here, I think it's pertinent to thread

Bacterial blotch spreads quite rapidly when there's not enough fae, and still water on the caps. Generally it'll spread throughout the substrate, as well as misting. To combat it up the fae massively, and avoid misting the caps

Yeah man totally, I removed a part of the substrate and when I checked this morning there was some pooling and the contam kept on spreading. I cut it short again because theres still a good half of the cake fruiting very nicely. Thing is now that I removed the top casing layer I got exposed grains which don't seem to be able to soak up moisture as well as the casing layer did. I'm thinking of doing a second thin casing layer for this part of the cake, any advice here would be appreciated. If this is the road to take how would adding some coffee grounds potentially effect the colonization of this replacement casing layer? I've read from some experienced posters that coffee casing layers colonize vigorously when done right but to be honest I haven't had much good experience with coffee (trich contams ) as an additive to bulk subs...I haven't experimented with it as a casing layer yet though. If I do use it I plan on combining it with jiffy seed starter mix because it proved to work on this same cake. The thing with the casing layer on this half-fruiting cake is that I didn't pasteurize it before applying it (when in reality the instructions called for soaking it and microwaving it before application) which probably raised my chances of contam in the first place >< ... live and learn Would microwaving coffee work just as well as a pasteurization of sorts before application?
