WBS / PF tek, substrate for the masses
    #2225661 - 01/07/04 12:43 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I see alot of questions about how to mix the two, so I'll post this one since its a great tek and it seems to have died. Anyway, Ryche used to have this posted on his site in the old days and I want to bring it back.

+*HAWKS MAGIC FORMULA*+

I use penningtons brand WBS with the bird-kote, I leave all the sunflower seeds and I never rinse between steeping and mixing.

First, steep your WBS seed for an hour.  (Thats what the original said, but I usually let it go for 1 1/2 to 2 hours)

Then mix:
20 tbls WBS
7  tbls BRF
4  tbls Flax seed meal
10 tbls vermiculite

(You can find the Flax seed meal right around the BRF in the health food store.)

Now add water till its clumpy, but not sticky or else the flax turns to syrup. I usually grab a handful and squeeze it, if a couple drops come out then its good.

This is enough for about 5 or 6, 1/2 pint jars depending on the size of your spoon, I double it to fill the PC. 1/2 pint jars will fully colonize in 15 to 20 days.

Now PC for an hour and treat them as if they were PF. I also leave the tape over the inoc. holes till theyre about 50% colonized, it doesnt seem to slow em down and it makes me feel better about keeping contams out, thats just my preference, so take it for what it is.

You can fruit them as cakes or case them or use them as spawn, Ive seen success with all three, and yields will be much better than just BRF / vermiculite.

Enjoy and pass it around.
