Any tree planters?

Looking for info.
I kind of like the idea of being a tree planter. I heard it can be a good way to make money. I'm pretty athletic so I'm not worried about that, also I'm not afraid of weather. I'm Canadian so input from Canada would be ideal, but international stuff would be cool too.
Heres what I wanna know: -Whats the season -how good is the pay -how's the culture -is it worth it?
Thanks for the info, good vibes!

I have only done it in Ontario. Typical season in Northern Ontario is May-July. Tree prices often are not too impressive there. There is some planting work in Southern Ontario and it can pay pretty well, but it seems to be more competitive to get a job. Starts more like April in the south. BC is said to be better for pay and I believe there's work for a lot more of the year, but I have never planted there.
In general a lot of the trick of it is economy of movement: adapting your techniques to changing conditions to avoid unneccesary exertion and joint pain. You build up a repertoire of different techniques over time. It's a bit like a martial art or something.
As with other outdoor activities, dressing right is big as well. If you start to overheat then you will slow down, so you want light thin layers you can open up or take off.

I wonder if you could just take a bunch of speed and be awesome at it? So long as you eat right.

I don't know anyone who used speed for planting, but a very high proportion of people smoke weed. That can be good as long as you don't go too overboard.

I like to pick up acorns, poke a little hole into the ground, drop the acorn in it, and cover it up.
Pretty sure I've planted a few trees by now.

I bet the squirrels find them first!
Maybe pine cones would work better because pesky squirrels wont steal them for their stash.

I did douglas fir planting in 2000. It sucked ass! Had to get up and be out the door by 4:30am and work past dark. It was in march-may and just as the snow was melting. The morels came up later but you don't have time to pick them if you want to do the tree job. You have to wear a giant paper boy tree bag that holds 100 trees. I got $.12 per tree which meant having to plant 1000 trees a day to make any money. In 12 hours time there's 720 minutes which means to keep up you have to plant almost 2 trees per minute without breaks. We'd literally take 5-10 minutes for lunch and piss while working. You have to scrape the snow and ice off of the soil. If any snow or ice gets in the planting hole then the tree dies. You also have to make sure the roots are straight. A J rooted tree will die.

Yeah it's mostly Mexicans that do the tree jobs in Oregon. Your spacing also has to be perfect at 11' between trees and maintaining that space between the row below too. If you're one foot off the foreman will yell his ass off at you and pull up all your trees he thinks are done wrong. He gets paid $.25 per tree.

Yeah 11' spacing sucks for that price. When I planted in Northern Ontario 13 cents was about the top end but the spacing was typically 6'.

When I was a kid, I once spent a few weeks planting trees for Weyerhauser, Shittiest job I ever did by a long shot.
The van would roll through the ghetto and we picked up whoever showed up and proceeded to whatever patch of land we were slated for that day. First we would stop at a grocery store so people could get lunch food; several of the guys would get weird crap like potted meat and shit.
Once at the field we would break out into two man teams, and attack the rows which were usually 0.5-1 mile long. One guy would jam in a spade thing ("dival bar") and the other guy used long metal tweezers to jam a pine tree start into the hole, being careful to avoid "J-rooting" the taproot. Then guy one would work the spade thingy to close up the hole. Two good paces and do it again. And again. And again . . .
A two man team would usually do some five or ten thousand trees a day. Backbreaking, boring, shit job that paid shit. I used to go down each row promising myself that I would quit when we got back to the side the van was parked on. I never did quit though; the season ran out soon, but mainly I didn't quit because the first day some of the guys were like "he'll quit by lunch" etc. Instead I was usually the fastest team for the day - the extra $20 for that honor was the only thing that made the pay even close to worth it.
