The wrap around the net is a garbage goal... It's always been called a garbage goal.. Anything shoved into the net in the midst of chaos is a "garbage goal" but a goals a goal.

As for the other goal, takes a pass, brings it in through the defense, with not an ounce of pressure, and just shoves it in around Murray's pads.

Those goals were only created from the penguins relaxing with their lead, which they've done all playoff long, those goals were not created by san jose, they were created by pittsburgh, san jose just shoved them in.

I not only disagree with your definition of a garbage goal, and particularly a wraparound being a garbage goal, but I disagree 100%, 180 degrees, whatever you want to call it.

The term garbage goal came into vogue around 1970 when the Hawks made a horrendous trade sending Phil Esposito and two other talented forwards to Boston. Esposito was pretty good before, but he became the biggest goal scorer in the NHL (during Bobby Orr's peak) by developing a technique that came to be known as scoring garbage goals. This involved putting his big tough body right in front of the goalie, and staying there, withstanding any number of cross checks to the back or body checks, and not moving, until he eventually was able to knock a rebound in. It was highly criticized at the time because he set records for most goals in a season, and most goals all-time. They were called garbage goals because he outscored the records of Gordie Howe,
and the Flying Frenchmen of Montreal who were considered far more skillfull.

Currently, the term garbage goal is seldom used and every team wants somebody tough enough to take the punishment of staying in front of the goalie  (particularly on the power play when you're essentially at even strength except that you have that extra guy blocking the goalie's vision.

Any internet search of the term garbage goal will refer to it as being less skillful.

A wraparound is the exact opposite of a garbage goal. Who are the most famous players for wraparounds? Wayne Gretzky, the most dangerous man in history if he had the puck behind your net. Currently, Patrick Kane and the dozen or so other most skillful players in the league.

I actually hadn't even heard the term garbage goal in decades. Skill or brawn; whatever works. As you said, a goal is a goal.

I have this theory that the days of the superstar goalie are gone, at least temporarily. The cap makes it impossible to keep  high priced long term goalie like the Brodeuers, the Haseks and the NYR guy around. Teams that  are winning multiple cups are usually doing it with different goalies, or mid priced guys. Quick is an exception but I think he's past his peak and they probably want to dump the contract. Most of the recent contenders have 2 goalies who can play, and while the coach might prefer one, I don't think they can give them huge contracts, with the best forwards getting over 10 million and the league's  very restrictive salary cap, being very dependent on the
Canadian oil economy.

Still butthurt my Sharks lost.

I mean, I have a lot more serious problems in life so obviously this shit is meaningless. But its nice to pretend it means something. That is the point of sports isn't it?

Get em next year. Hope you don't have to lose a lot of salary cap casualties like the Hawks do every year. Success is very threatening in the NHL

Big moves yesterday. Tampa resigns Steven Stamkos, one of the leagues very best goal scorers, to a long term contract. There was a lot of speculation that he would go elsewhere.

And what has to be one of the biggest trades of defensemen in decades, Montreal sends P.K. Subban to Nashville for Shea Webber. Subban has more offensive flash, but is a very controversial player; he gave 10 million to the Montreal children's hospital, but got multiple penalties for "taking a dive", and there were a lot of questions about how much his teammates liked having him around. They are both Norris Trophy type players. Webber never won, but they are both contenders every year.

With Price at goalie, many analysts think this trade makes Montreal more of a cup contender. Montreal also acquired Andrew Shaw for 6 years from the perpetually salary cap ridden Black Hawks. Shaw is not a well known player (I don't think he ever got 20 goals and 20 assists in the same season), but at 5 foot 10.5 he was the Hawks toughest player for years. He played everywhere from the first line to the 4th line, and on power plays he stood in the goalie's face. Hawk's fans are depressed about his loss but glad that he went far far away.

Subban in Nashville will put more fans in the seats. This has never been an issue in Montreal.

Yea, it will be interesting to see if Webber finally wins a Norris with all the added attention of playing in Montreal.

Tampa did well to lock Steven Stamkos in at less than max money. Game them a little maneuvering room.

Yea, Tampa has an advantage in that Florida has no income tax. 8 million in Tampa is like 10+ anywhere else.

Yeah and I also think he made a Tom Brady type move and took less so the team could win. Nobody anticipated that the NHL salary cap would stay so low for so long. When the Hawks gave Toews and Kane the giant future contracts, they never anticipated this. The owner would pay anything to win, but we have to give away the middle of the team every year, and its crippling Chicago. I would never have said this years ago but now it is absolutely necessary for some of the newer teams to do really good so we get a good TV contract. That is the only thing that is going to raise the cap with the Canadien oil economy in the dumpster.

Patrick Roy just resigned as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche citing philosophical differences with GM Joe Sakic on how to build and operate  the team. Roy and Sakic, both Hall of Famers, won two Stanley Cups with the Avs and Roy won two earlier with the Canadians. Roy was coach for 3 years and did great at the beginning gaining 112 points and a first place finish but was eliminated in the first round, and never returned to the playoffs.

I became an Avs fan the day they acquired the goalie from Montreal to go along with their two star forwards, Sakik and Peter Forsberg. (The Blackhawks sucked at the time)

As a coach, probably Roy's most unconventional trait was pulling the goalie with as many as 9 minutes left in a period.

I always lose sleep over the cup. I attribute this spring to that key forward acquired from Toronto, which gave them depth beyond Crosby and Malkin. The Hawks, again, as every year gave up talent in abundance, but we got campell back for cheap, more defensive depths, and prospects who are now supposed to be ready for the big time. No other sport requires you to dump so much talent every season for the cap. I like low gas prices but would somebody please buy Canadian oil?

After having a day to listen to the analysts, Patrick Roy failed because their defense was atrocious. This refers to all the skaters on the ice. Their shots vs shots against was by far the worst in  the league, and everyone seemed to think they did have enough good defensemen to compete. The 6 best fired coaches are already gone, but sometimes you have to go with somebody new.

Colorado had been the most successful of the Southern teams in the NHL, Except LA, so this is disappointing. They won a couple Cups and had a minor dynasty. There are  a couple Sothern teams that I would ship to Canada in a minute. (In Canada, win or lose, they will fill the arena up.) But I thought Colorado was real. We'll see.

OK this isn't the NHL. It's The World Cup of Hockey. I am very confused. Why do they keep mentioning Team North America. Canada has a team and they are the big favorites, as they always are in international play. USA has a team and they are as always sorta tied for 2nd with about 6 European teams.

Is my confusion related to this? I know they were doing an international 24 years and younger tournament. Is that where Team North America came from?
