The league is doing something very strange and innovative to gain experience in their new 3 on 3 overtimes during the preseason. 3 games each night are designated games with overtime whether they are tied or not. All the other games will go to 3 on 3 overtime only if regulation play ends in a tie. They will play sudden death overtime for five minutes, and if no one scores they will then proceed with the shootout.
In the 3 designated games, their will be 3 on 3 sudden death overtime for 5 minutes regardless of the final score in regulation. I'm unsure if a score would have any relevance. Probably not because there will be no shootouts in these games.

Who would have ever thought 3 on 3 overtimes would exist...
In any event, Go Caps! TJ Oshie is looking good so far in the preseason.

3 on 3 is to get rid of too many shootouts. They used to say the penalty shot was the most exciting thing in sports (IDK, hockey announcers used to say that). Shootouts turned into every day semi boredom. 3 on 3 seems like an exciting way to reduce shootouts, but it creates a whole new set of challenges and some teams and some goalies are going to have a definite advantage.

Sharks Rafi Torres has been suspended for 41 games. His latest dirty hit was about the same as all the others. He takes more than 4 strides, and hits the guy in the head with his shoulder, and he hits guys who passed the puck away a long time ago. He was cited for illegal hit to head, interference and charging.
His many previous infractions include a 25 game suspension in 2010 for an illegal check to the head of Marion Hossa during the playoffs that resulted in Hossa being taken off on a stretcher.
Torres missed most of the last two seasons with knee injuries. Given the injury history and the increasingly severe sanctions, I wonder how much more we will see him.

Very exciting finish to Rangers 3-2 win at Chicago. With 1 minute left it looked like the Hawks tied it, but the goal was waived off when one of the officials lost sight of the puck under Lundquist's pad. Then the officials were on the phone with Toronto which didn't make sense, because the announcers were saying that call is unreviewable. They were playing 4 on 4 because Andrew Shaw and one of the Rangers were smacking each other with their sticks in front of the NY net. The Hawks pulled Crawford to make it 5 on 4, and won every face off, but couldn't put one in. The last 10 seconds sucked because the Hawks got cute and just passed the puck around waiting for the perfect shot. They should have just put it on net and knocked people down. They wont call a penalty in the last 10 seconds unless you hit the goalie. Unfortunately Shaw was in the penalty box, and he's the one they needed in front of the net.

Yea if you go back and watch that no-goal in real time you can see the puck cross the line prior to the ref blowing his whistle but I guess they didn't give a shit. I don't see how that would be unreviewable, so I don't get what the announcers were saying there.

I thought the Hawks got fucked but I am completely biased. I think the play is unreviewable because another camera can't see what the official saw. I always thought it was bullshit rule, but otherwise they would just beat on the goalie's pads. I couldn't hear the whistle through the crowd noise but I saw when he waved off the goal.
Well, they didn't get fucked as bad as the Lions did against the Seahawks.
It doesn't matter. It was the first game. The Hawks were the 4th seed in the West, but they were favored to win and they did. It doesn't matter what St. Louis or San Jose does because they never know how to play the "second season". And I'll say the same thing I said last year about the 2 biggest stars in the East. Ovechkin and Stamkos have never been playoff heros in their lives

Sharks looked great last night. It's nice to see my favorite player (Pavelski) finally got that C on his jersey. And the new kid in goal looked solid. Kinda funny having DeBoer as coach now, I've always made fun of him because he's such a goofy looking guy, almost looks like he's possessed or something.

True. A lot has changed in SJ this year though, we shall see if it's for the better.

Yea, its wild how Jumpin Joe was stripped of his Captaincy without being traded. That's gotta hurt the ego a bit, but they looked fantastic last night.... Or perhaps the Kings looked like shit....
And I'm surprised no one brought this up yet, but the Leafs successfully used a coaches challenge last night on a goal that involved Goaltender Interference. It was cool to see that get used. Now coaches will be saving that timeout so that they can utilize the coaches challenge if need be. No more 1st period, 'Get your shit together' timeouts from here on out.

The Sabres vs Senators game featured a coaches challenge involving a missed offsides call. The Sens challenged an Evander Kane goal on the basis that the puck was brought in the zone offside. It was a super close call, but the goal ended up being disallowed. We are really starting to see this new challenge being applied beneficially.

So you get one time out in the game, and one in OT (at least in the playoffs) and that is the only time you can challenge?

Yea you can only challenge if you have not used your timeout. At least in regulation, I'm not sure about the overtime rules...

Jagr passes Wayne Gretzky on the all-time power play goal scoring list... Jags has 6 points through 4 games and is tied for the league lead in goals and tied for 3rd place in points in the early season. It is unbelievable that he can still produce at age 43. He played against Buffalo and 18 year old Jack Eichel on Thursday, stressing the ages of both Jagr and Eichel, 25 years separates the two.
