Actually only the aerial mycelium is white. The vegetative mycelium that grows through the substrate is sort of greyish and is so thin it's to hard to see even on agar.

The aerial myc will also have that sandy/granular look too, but it just hasn't turned green yet. Generally trich is MUCH more than the visible green spot.
TBH I've seen lots of people mistake trich for cobweb

Here's also an example to show how similar trichs myc can actually be to cube myc, and how stress (shaking a jar/cutting the culture) will help sporulte/show trich. This is also a reason why it doesn't show up until after you've spawned.
Do you like to do a shake and recovery of your jars before you spawn them taGyo?

Yeah I've definitely mistaken trich for cobweb before but this time I just let all three jars develop as they may. The third one actually showed up out of nowhere, I think in one of the shots you can kind of see some of the mycelium.
I think a reason why people may mistake it for cobweb as well is speed. This thing colonized these jars in two or three days, the myc didn't stand a chance.
By the time I'm ready to spawn I've shaken once or twice. If a jar is really sketchy I'll shake it one more time and let it recover. Typically if I don't get 24-36 hour recovery in some form it's a contam. Some strains like PE will take 48-60 and I'll accept that but normally past two days with very little or no recovery is a very bad sign.
All of this trich showed up after a shake, if I had before pictures they all look like healthy cube myc with a spot of grey or two. One jar looked like bruised myc which was my first telltale that I wasn't going to be spawning these guys
Thanks for dropping by Mad,
Great first post in this thread

I believe this should read "This is what happens when the trichoderma mycelium makes contact with fresh air".

Would it really be considered mycelium though? I agree, that needs to be changed but what do you call trichoderma's manifestation of mushroom mycelium, or is mycelium a general term?

I believe so, yes. It is referred to as mycelium in mad seasons post above.

that's great shit to know! Fuck trich eh? Really this is why sab work is SO important. I know we've all had trich bombs happen to our rooms. The reason we can still grow is because of the knowledge we have of trichoderma.
It doesn't matter what you think. All that matters is clean spawn

You can get a little pocket microscope for like $10-20. They have limited usefulness for identification but you can tell Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trichoderma apart once they've begun sporulating and you can sometimes do it without opening the jar.

weed growers use them to look at buds but even in america you can't just go buy them unless you have a science store or pretty awesome headshop in your town
