If you could go back to watch any athlete in their prime, who would it be?
    #22255562 - 09/18/15 10:25 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm tempted to pick Babe Ruth so I could get some other bonus Yankees of that era. (Gehrig, etc) Pretty sure Murderers Row was around 1927-28
I'd probably want to time it so they're playing the Tigers so I could see Ty Cobb play. That sounds like it'd be a fun event to go back to and watch for yourself.

Don't think their careers had much overlap, though.
Anyways, who would you pick?

I would build a time machine, travel to the future, and then come back to watch Aaron Rodgers.

Bobby Orr. I watched him play in his prime but I was too young to really appreciate what I was seeing.

Realistically Michael Jordan was the most amazing athlete in team sports in any era. Most of us saw him.

Jordan was fun to watch and I don't even like basketball.  Gretzky is another favorite.

Yeah, I'm glad I got to see Jordan.. We had the NBA league pass thing on satellite when they got their 72 wins or whatever it was. I missed less than a dozen games that year.

Even though I've never tried ice skating, from what I've read, Gretzky is the most dominant player of his sport, no?

Gretsky was incredible but he didn't really body check or get checked. Part of this was his skill and part was the unwritten rule that you don't hit Gretsky because he has doubled all our salaries and doubled all our owners profits.

So it was very strange that the greatest of all time was playing in this vicious contact sport, but it wasn't much of a contact sport for him.

I got to watch a few years of Willie Mays still in his prime. He was an amazing outfielder besides the hitting. He got 12 consecutive gold gloves and made 24 All-Star teams. The NL All Star outfield  was Aaron, Mays and Clemente. The NL won most of the games back then. Willie Mays was the only one who went by the same name through his career. Back then it was Hank Aaron and Bob Clemente.

I saw Willie Mays play around 1969. My brother got his autograph at the game. We used to go to the Cincinnati Reds games a lot.

John Elway was fucking tight.
Mccaffery and Terrell Davis. Now that was a fucking football team. This years Broncos team is pretty fucking grimey too though, they just grind shit out.

Nadia Comenci? Brah.. low key though, womens gymanistics gets intense a fuck.

Walter Peyton forsure.
What about Butkis, and the Steel Curtain. That was back when football was just about toughness and grit.

I really wish i was around for Stockton  and Malone when they were at their best. I got Stockon/Malone at  the “wily vet” period, not when they were the GOAT combo.

Steve Young and Elway were kind of similar because they could both run for big gains, which happened a lot because the coverage was all spread out to defend the pass and those two could elude lineman.

To me the difference between them was that Elway had learn to be an NFL QB under national attention. He was famous coming out of college and famous for his  his refusal to play for the Baltimore Colts. I thought it was a dick move, but he had a big contract offer from the Yankees as well, so he had leverage to pick his own team. He wasn't very good his first two years, while adapting to the pro game. Then he got good, but developed the reputation as the guy who couldn't win the big game. Then he got the reputation as the guy who could nearly always stage a comeback in the 4th quarter so everyone had to respect him whether they liked him or not. He wasn't particularly good in his first four Super Bowls, but I don't think his team played well either until the 4th SB when Terrel Davis took over the game. The following year Elway was the SB MVP in the final game of his career. I can't think of anyone who ever finished their career that dramatically.

Steve Young had a very different career path. He started out at Tampa and was almost never on national TV. I assume he didn't play to well, but showed ability. Then he had the luck to be traded to SF in the middle of the dynasty. He sat on the bench and learned from Montana and Walsh for several years. When his turn came up he was a ready made superstar on a ready made dynasty, and he didn't disappoint.

Elway was a one man team.

Once they gave him a team he won back to back. I dont know about that..... Oh and the teams he played in the SB were legitimate dynasties. Skins and Niners of the 80s were fantastic teams.

I agree with the Niners talk. He had it easy, but he was still fun to watch.

No.  I Won't play if I suck and at 58 I suck.  When I couldn't play up to acceptable standards, which happened finally at around 45, I stopped playing.  It isn't fun.  It is just frustrating.

Using quotes implies i said those words verbatim, which I did not. I ignored you cuz you suck, like really badly.  Plus my fucking girlfriend knows more about sports than you.......

Now that your little OTD buddies post in here too, I gotta work on killing the cancer before it metastasizes.

Haha.  Exlax...methed out and as delusional as ever.

Exactly the kinda shit I’m talking about.
Are you even capable of staying on topic.

You respond to posts instantaneously at any time of the day (isn’t it like 3am in deliverance land) i dont get it....
Its as if you are subsidized by the government to be a worthless troll.

You completely avoided the 100% valid questions. LOL. You have over 1k more posts than me even though you registered around two years after me. If I am subsidized by the government to be a worthless troll, does that mean you are subsidized by the taxpayers to be a worthless addict who posts on the shroomery? Why is it abnormal for me to reply in 5 minutes but normal for you to reply in 12 minutes? Who are these other OTDers that are "now" posting in here? Why did you try talking about how great the mountains are even though you live on the front range like the rest of the tourists? Who else flames people the way you and zappaistravis do? Haha, you can't even say me...that's the best part.

Lay off the drugs, Bassfreak Senior.

It is 1:22AM up here in the high country, same as it is down there on the front range. (AKA Western Nebraska.)

The front range means the rockies
As in west of Denver, 14k ft peaks everywhere.

Nebraska is flat as fuck dude and central time zone. Have you ever been in a plane? Go take the horse and buggy to the library and buy rent some maps.

To anybody living in the High Country (aka the real Colorado), the front range just means Denver, Boulder, CO Springs, etc.  It's the part of Colorado we would rather forget about.  It really is just Western Nebraska.

You are a tourist/gaper any time you come up...and you probably suck at skiing.

Are you saying he skis like you post?

Do you know why we are infested with this guy?  Because OTD has caught the dieds and it is mostly due to him and his ilk.

Ya you definitely from the midwest.

BTW Colorado means red river and is named after the fucking river that barely even runs through the state.

Go back to Wisconsin you clueless chud.

BTW i feel like that episode of South Park where chef has to stop saying “in da hizzle” and change it to “flippity floppity floop" cause white people steal black peoples slang and try to make it their own.
