noob help...oyster spore print

Hello, I am really exited about trying this hobby. I want to start with growing a few oyster mushrooms. I am a little reluctant to spend 20-30 bucks on a spore syringe, to try something that may be a complete waste. Can any one tell me a cheaper source or maybe share a print with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok, a few things: When you order an edible syringe (from a reputable vendor) you are getting live mycelium in liquid suspension, already live, already proven, already cleaned up. You don't need to isolate and do the crap shoot of finding a good isolation or running multi spore grows. In fact, that's what you get with a spore print.
Secondly, when requesting a print from 'general population' you have no guarantee it is properly labelled. You have no idea of their sterile procedures and much higher likelihood of failure all around.
If you are as excited as you say, and I remember my newbie motivation, spend the $20. You'll be much happier. I've ordered from almost all of the vendors who advertise here and been treated very well and satisfied w/out exception. Most orders arrive within two to three days for me. Give it a shot. Pay for it once, follow the tek and by the time your culture starts to get tired you'll have the skills to renew it via spore print.

Here are the Shroomery sponsors, just in case you can't find them.

Thank you for the advice, any thoughts on the best eating variety? I live out in the sticks and cannot get oysters around here

You might want to consider your local environment (temperature) and what type of materials you have easy/cheap access to. This might help you pick a variety to start with. For example, if you live somewhere cold (less than 15C or 60F) and have a lot of spare hardwood sawdust, King Oysters might be good. Different varieties have different environment requirements and growing parameters. Do some research, a book like Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by Stamets is full of such information.

Oyster is rather easier to grow as you may get a strain of mycelium from the stem if you buy them right.
Spore syringes don't carry mycelium, they carry hydrated spores that can germinate.
When you inoculate your grain jar with those syringes you induce spores into a substrate (grain). Later the sores germinate in the jar and become mycelium.
You can make your own syringe. Just search the forum and youtube for "spore syringe".
Hope that this helps.

Thank you everyone. I ordered a PEARL mycelium syringe off ebay. I inoculated some grain jars today. I also put a drop of mycelium on a make shift pettrie dish. I used PDA, I found I had everything in my kitchen so figured why not play a little.

Within 3 days you should see that mycelium take off like a racehorse if the genetics are good, which they should be coming from a vendor.
Post some pics as things progress, we are always happy to give advice on grows.

Vendor? I thought he said he ordered them off eBay? Did I miss something?
