Sealy, Tx- For the second time in two weeks, the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, with the aid of other agencies, took down a hidden marijuana grow operation along the Brazos River.
The plants, irrigation system and campsite were raided Sept. 9 in the Raccoon Bend area, resulting in the removal and destruction of 5,370 plants.
Two weeks earlier just north of Wallis, 8,653 plants were destroyed and a camp torn down by law officers. It is not known if the two operations are connected.
According to a press release issued by Sheriff Jack Brandes, his office was notified Sept. 3 by the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Narcotics Marijuana Eradication Team that they noticed a marijuana grow located next to the Brazos River in the Raccoon Bend area.
Five days later, Brandes along with a DPS narcotics officer, flew over the location and observed the grow. On Sept. 9 at 6 a.m., a team consisting of DPS narcotics officers, Drug Enforcement Agency agents, Austin County Special Response Team members and Austin County deputies were assembled and at daybreak removed the marijuana and destroyed the irrigation system and camp area.
No one was found tending the plants or in the area. Austin County EMS units were on location and stood by in case of a medical emergency.
Approximately 5,370 marijuana plants were removed, but due to the heavy woods and rough terrain, all the plants were flown out by helicopter and then loaded into the sheriff’s office cattle trailer.
The next day a destruction order was obtained from the Austin County District Attorney’s Office and at 2 p.m. all the marijuana plants were destroyed at the Austin County Precinct 4 yard located on Peters San Felipe Road.
“I would like to thank all agencies involved in this take down,” Brandes said. “Again it is great that all agencies work together to keep our county good.”

I'd love to know how much tax money is spent on an operation of this magnitude verses how much tax revenue could be generated if this were legal.

Indeed. Yet I'll bet that potent Mexican meth is rampant through the state.
