I've tried this temp but it seemed as though  my jars and tubs colonized faster and more even at 70-75. But my fruits did better at 76-79

I used to get hung up on temp...Room temp works great for colonization... If you are comfortable... Your jars will be.

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 83F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

Mycelium should be exposed to ambient room light from day of inoculation as has been known for many years.  Light is not a pinning trigger until after full colonization and an increase in air is given, and even then it's a secondary pinning trigger.

Under 75, above 65, is always optimal, going over only invites issues.

You will hear lots of different temps quoted. If people recommend 75F then why not fucking just say it?!? or a range, it takes more characters to fucking type room temperature.

In the room I grow in I would not be comfortable at the temp I incubate shrooms at either, most people I know would not be. Saying stuff like this is even more characters again, or talking of fucking t-shirts and shit.

Just say what you mean and don't presume to know how people live or what they find comfortable.

Fair enough... I colonize and fruit at around 72 degrees Fahrenheit...the temperature fluctuates a little because of my home's temperature and where I keep the jars sometimes gets a little hotter than my living room...
You are right blackout...I guess I was being lazy...I forget sometimes that I was once brand new (still new) and wanted specific info....so...

My fruiting room is like 67 right now. I don't feel like running heat so I'll keep it there. It'll just take longer and potentially stronger fruits.

Thing is you were not lazy, it took longer to type out room temperature!

Imagine asking "how long should I steam my PF jars"
-about the length of a film
-about 1/4 the length of time you sleep for.

how many times should I mist per day
-about the number of times you take a shit per day
-the amount of potatoes most people eat with dinner.

In that quote I was referring to Bod inferring that "room temperature" was defined as 20C, and that it is not the temperature of someones house, but rather like it was a scientific term which is widely agreed upon, like the triple point of water, or boiling point of water, or freezing. I meant in literature (not this site) you will see lots of varying opinion on what it means.

Many saying on this forum certainly do mean the temperature of your house.

+1, this is what really irritates me. People say just grow in your room, then you say your room is 60F and instead of them saying/admitting "oh, I really should have stated a temp range" you get shit like "you fucking oddball, do you live in an igloo" and they go on their merry way saying the same vague stuff the next day. Or worse still they just say "yeah, 60F is totally fine" just to save face and not admit that they would not grow at that temp themselves.

In one of the last posts I saw RR commenting in a guy had it at an average of 73F and he advised him to find a warmer spot.

That's the problem, cunts would rather waste peoples time and have them have to needlessly go googling answers, it's really fucking ridiculous.

How much grain do you use per pint jar "aha, get the year of the birthday of robert deniro and divide by 10, sure just google it, I know the answer but why make it fucking easy" actually going out of their way to spend more time rather than just answer

Google shows 21C, different to Bod's number. RR recommends quite a bit higher.

And this is why I and many others do add additional heat. I expect many others would have an improved experience growing if they also heated, but many do believe this blanket "if your jars are in a room they are fine" often people add in some condescending shit like "unless you're living in an igloo" or some similar crap. So I expect many peoples jars are on average a fair bit below 65F and wondering what is going on, since so many people said it should be fine to just have them in an area they live in.

Many grow in bedrooms. I know I would be advising the most people I know that they would need an additional heat source.

65F is 18C for reference.

Hey Edmunter what did you mean when you said " We now colonise on shelves at room temperature"

Over the years the recommended colonisation temps used by people have dropped a bit. Of several things being "outdated" or fallen out of use in this hobby I would have liked one of them to have been the vague term "room temperature". For many people the room they incubate in is within range, others still have to heat for best results.

In the RR videos it says to incubate at 75-81F, that is 6 fucking characters to type, it takes longer to type out "room temperature"!

I remember some stupid cunt who rather than admitting that many people do not and/or prefer not to live in rooms in this range -instead he said I need to heat my house.

Colonising jars will generate some heat, I have always felt the amount of heat & subsequent temp rise is vastly overestimated for normal growers with 3-4 jars. Also in colder incubation temps the growth will obviously be a lot slower, and so this generated heat will result in less of a temperature rise. I cannot recall seeing any tests on internal jar vs incubation temp that I would be happy with.

Many incubate in bedrooms. Mine is at 15.5-16C at the moment. This seems the norm where I live. The 75-81F range is 23.9-27.2C

Quote:

What is an ideal room temperature in a home?
20°C is a very comfortable temperature for living spaces while 16°C is sufficient for bedroom areas.

- See more at: http://www.seai.ie/Power_of_One/FAQ/Energy_Efficiency/What_is_an_ideal_room_temperature_in_a_home_.html#sthash.V5bvOMMh.dpuf

I know in my work people complain about it being to hot if it was in the 75-81F range.

Also room temps may change in coming or previous decades even in the same region & culture.

Comfort cannot be defined absolutely, but the World Health Organization's standard for warmth says 18C (64F) is suitable for healthy people who are appropriately dressed. For those with respiratory problems or allergies, they recommend a minimum of 16C (60.8C); and for the sick, disabled, very old or very young, a minimum of 20C (68F).

Quote:

According to one widely quoted model, initially devised in 1997 by the Building Research Establishment (UK) and used in My 2050, average indoor temperatures have risen from 12C in 1970 to about 17.5C (63.5F) today.

Quote:

The last comprehensive measurement of home indoor temperatures is from 1996, when the English House Condition Survey found although living room temperatures in winter had hovered around the 19C-mark since 1986, hallways had warmed - up from 16.3C to 17.9C.

"And for bedrooms, you'll be far more comfortable while you're asleep if it is about 14 or 15C," says Shipworth.

Quote:

"In 2005, Prime Minister Koizumi (Japan) decreed that no government building should be heated above 20C or cooled below 28C,"

Many here grow in bedrooms. Mine would be about 16C, and would be a good bit colder during the day when the house is totally empty and no heating on, as it would be for most people I know.

:blah:

I provided a temperature in the same sentence that I said what was acceptable.

68F even falls under that range so, I see no harm.  It's factual thing that old people like it around 80 degrees for some reason.

I think we all hear and answer the same questions, so certain questions seem to develop a generic answer, it almost becomes a habit. I'm definitely guilty of this myself. I remember reading, searching, watching other people ask, and honesty being afraid/embarrassed to ask questions because I found conflicting answers with the search function. We were all "green" once (not that I'm some super experienced grower, but I'm learning from the people here and my own experience everyday) Noobs need structure, specific information, and most of all...their own experience. The "Teks" provide the structure, "We, the members" Provide the specific info,...and they have to have their own successes and failures to get experience. I encounter people everyday following outdated info, because that's what they "thought" was the right thing. Hell I started with the original Mushroom Growers Guide and a saved copy of PF's old website on my laptop.
What I'm getting at with this wall of txt...is that I'm going to do a better job helping my Noob brothers...and if I'm screwing up TC's tell me...thats how I will get better, but I'm proud of what I've accomplished and I'm going to help the next round of Noobs become successful Shroomerites.:yoda:

what about night time drops though?
is it ok if the temp is 75 by day but drops to 65 by night?

I haven't had any problems with a temp drop at night, but I think mine doesn't drop more than 5 degrees.
That being said, it's my understanding that 65 degrees Fahrenheit is still fine. If you find yourself needing to raise the temperature, I would heat the room instead of the jars themselves, in the colder months I use an oil-filled, small, electric space heater... It works great and heats my grow room evenly and quietly.
Remember your jars will actually be a little higher temperature than the room due to the mycelium growth.

So I got a new 48" two bulb t8 6500k fixture for 10 bucks at Walmart!! Just a heads up. Its doesn't get hot at all. Measured temps in my closet. Day 73 night 70-71 kept bouncing. Works great. All stages of growing.
