I wouldn't put a dirty pin on rice flour or cornmeal. You can do that on agar because the low nutrient content promotes myc growth and contams don't thrive as easily on low nutrient. Actually, you should lower the nutrient content by half in your agar recipe when doing cloning. Cornmeal and rice flours are super mega nutritive substrates for cloning.

I didn't mean transferring pins on cornmeal plates. I would first transfer a wedge from MS agar, let the cornmeal plate colonize and wait to see some pins. What do you think?

josex, ive not tried direct clone pins on cornmeal plates. only inner stem cut clones. they grow just fine.

Oh, Sorry, i thought you wanted to drop a pin into those rice flour plates lol. I would make a MS grow, clone a pin of a cluster in weak agar, make a transfer or two then inoculate those rice flour plates and blend that.

Maybe it's a stupid a idea, but some people here have told me that the best cultures they've gotten were from pins grown invitro (agar dishes).

Maybe they were lucky. You will only get 1 or 2 mushrooms growing on a agar dish. There's isn't enough variety of mushrooms to choose a trait that you like for cloning.

IMO, pins don't readily grow on cornmeal plates but if you make cornmeal cake (pf style) plates they pin readily. All of my cornmeal cake plates pin (including my edibles) before I ever get a chance to transfer them. Cornmeal only plates are great for germinating spores and making first transfers. Atleast that's my take on it anyhow. I haven't used agar in about 2 months. Cornmeal and cornmeal cake pasty plates are just too easy and I don't have to order anything over the internet.

Yes, at least the way you say you ensure that the pin you take is apt to grow on the sub of your choice, whereas if you take an invitro pin, you'd never know if it's gonna perform well on bulk subs until you test it. I remember you told me that idea some time ago

ok duly noted, thanks! I agree, this tek in conjunction with pastyplates + bottle subs is just the bomb. That's what I want to do when I can fucking grow again

I mean in a monotub, there's tons of mushrooms to choose for cloning. If you like clusters and if you want more mushrooms production, you should take pins from clusters. But on an agar dish with only 2 mushrooms to choose from... not enough variety to pick a trait you like.

Right! Believe me, I think the same. But the other day in the thread pastyplates, two TC's told me their best cultures were taken from pins grown invitro. You can check it out if you feel curious.

Took my first transfers to my strange suddenly discolored CmP, I think that I may have cooked it too much to begin with, not enough water when put it into the pastyplate and it got further cooked out during the PC cycle.
Hopefully it still works, I'm going to throw out the other 6 plates I made and try again, maybe I'll halve the recipe until I can get it how I want it.

I agree with you on this but at the same time there is something to be said about the pins that occur on agar/cornmeal plates etc...I mean all the same mycelium and sub strains are present and if one or several, decide its time to reproduce now, like right now, on this agar and the others don't....then would it be assumptious to say that they are of good nature?
I'd like to think that they might be quick pinners. I still got a clone on agar I plucked from the top of an old LC, that had strong bluing. I say grow them out and see what happens. At least thats my plans.
