what are my odds of having HIV

So about a year and a half ago I had a gay experience with a guy that I met on grinder. He said he had only been with one guy before me but that they only swapped head and that he had never actually been fucked.
He seemed like a nice enough guy, around my age (19) but I didn't use a condom and he was pretty willing to allow me to cum inside of him now that I look back on it. Even after the fact I asked him if I had really been his first and he still said yes. I fucked him twice in one night and never really talked to him too much after that.
I plan to get tested in the future but I'm looking for some words of comfort before then. What are my chances of having contracted hiv from a one time experience without a condom? Like I said he seemed like a pretty clean guy but you never know I guess.

Did you know that more straight people have HIV than gay people?
IDK, you probably don't have HIV. The chances of getting it is way higher if you're receiving it than giving it, I'm pretty sure.

That's what I thought
I know that in some people hiv can remain dormant for up to 10 years, but i think I would have had some symptoms by now if I had it right?

The bottom is at a much higher risk than the top. Even if the guy was positive, you would have to be pretty unlucky.
You guys are stupid idiots though. Does anyone in their early 20s use condoms? OP your age group has the highest rates of new HIV infections because most of your peers think aids is for old people.

Often people get a seroconversion sickness when the virus first takes hold, anywhere from a few days to weeks from exposure. Flu like symptoms and a fever for a few days. Then the slow decimation of your immune system begins. HIV doesn't lie dormant, it just takes a while before there is enough damage to the immune system to become symptomatic.
Also, the most infectious person is someone who has just been infected themselves. People who are HIV positive but are on successful antiretroviral therapy are not infectious. This leads to a counterintuitive truth: it is safer to have sex with someone who knows they are positive and are being treated than someone who doesn't have any idea about their status.

your chances are pretty damn slim
go get tested and you'll feel better
my ex- had hiv and a 12" dick, I found his meds (he told me he was clean)
somehow I made it through THAT just fine and he was the one fucking ME
so... yeah, it's scary but even if the guy was positive you'd still have a pretty slim chance
keep in mind my ex- was on anti-retrovirals
(i was still f*ing pissed that he lied)

That bears out the research that people on retrovirals are not infectious. If he wasn't being treated, your story would be a lot different.

He was on meds, but only for like three weeks >.>
Still, I've been tested enough since then. It was kinda scary at first. Well, scary in the respect there were plenty of other problems in my life at the time I just ignored it for a while. It was a relief to finally get it off my back once I got other things straightened out.

Yes. Probably. I think the chances of conversion I read were something like 1 in 40 to 1 in 60 for one time. It was like one in 20 for subbing.
At least, that was from the SF Clinic's site.
Seems rather insignificant at first but not from an epidemiological perspective.

Thanks guys, that's a relief!
So one more question that I'm kind of curious about, how long does it usually take for hiv to take hold after someone is infected? Im not talking about the initial illness that comes shortly after infection,I'm talking about the actual symptoms of hiv. How long would it be before someone is like holy shit something isn't right?

Well, that would be full-blown AIDS at that point.
It can take years, up to ten or maybe even more before you actually notice it.
Like you said, most people get sick within a few weeks after the encounter if they were infected. Some people don't get this but the majority do. That's an immune response though, and I don't count that as actual "symptoms" of the virus anyway. But yeah, from what I know it can be a year or two, or maybe ten+ . Depends on the person and environment and also the strain.

HIV is not curable. You cannot rid your body of the virus once you are infected. It is treatable, but even with treatment you life span is shortened and you have to be on expensive drugs for the rest of your life.

Hmm... I guess that would have been an option if I were already on it.
Like you said, even just the other person taking anti-retrovirals narrows the chances to slim-to-none.
Well, once they are on it for a while. I don't know about 3 weeks :V
It really changes someone though. My ex- from Florida (different ex) moved to SF and was extremely promiscuous, to the point I wouldn't do anything with him. That was a good move because, low and behold, he tested positive like half a year after moving there. I could swear his personality took a 180 somewhere and he's all straight edge now and living healthy with another ex of mine.
What a shame. Damn hot, too

I think this is semantics.
Curable vs. treatable.
If someone is HIV+ they have the virus and there is no cure for that.
There is treatment however, and people live a "mostly normal" life with treatment at this point.

AIDS is treatable in the same way HIV is. Back In the 90s there were a lot of people with aids at the time when the retrovirals came out, and they got better and are still alive. None of this means HIV is curable. You will always be infected and without treatment you will eventually get aids unless you die of something else first.

Oh for sure. The damage to the immune system reverses itself very slowly and there is probably a point where it is just too far gone, but usually that is someone who is already very ill.
Also, forgot to mention that if you are the top, being circumcised reduces the chance of infection by over 60%.

I was going to argue that HIV is in fact CURABLE, but then thought, these mother fatherfuckers won't listen and/or do their own goddamned research, so fuck it - let them all die for their stupidity.
Then I thought that wouldn't be a very Shroomy thing to say, so I deleted it.

Hey, I helped with some of that "research" :p
Well, like 12 years ago when I was still working in academia.
Even though NERPRC showed it was possible there is no "cure" for HIV unless you're referring to post-exposure prophylaxis or something. Long term, though... Nope
If there's a cure then what is it? What's the name

I meant something actually being prescribed to people.
Though looking it up it says there has been research done that shows it might be possible through nano-particle therapy.
It looks highly theoretical at this point.
So, back to square one. It might happen some day but there isn't actually a cure yet.

There's some research to suggest circumcision reduces the risk of HIV infection because the foreskin contains a high concentration of Langerhans Cells, which are susceptible to the HIV virus.
The degree of protection is contentious and only relates to the insertive partner (hetero male or gay top). On an epidemiological level it seems to make little difference to transmission rates of gay men, but might offer a benefit on an individual level.
